Jack Smith sought to review former President Trump\u2019s direct messages, draft tweets, and location information as his office battled for information related to his account on X, formerly known as <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Newly unsealed court records offer more detail about what prosecutors were looking for when they\u00a0subpoenaed records\u00a0related to the Twitter account in January, a request granted by the court.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The details come from February hearings held before then-U.S. District Court Chief Judge Beryl Howell, who repeatedly questioned whether the company\u2019s resistance reflected an effort by then-newly minted CEO Elon Musk\u2019s efforts to get \u201ccozy\u201d with Trump.<\/p>\n<figure 2023.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Much of Twitter\u2019s resistance to turning over the information was due to a Justice Department request to not disclose the request to Trump, initially refusing to comply with the court order to turn over the records in a decision that would cost them $350,000.<\/p>\n<p>But in the tran<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>s, the company also expressed fear some of Trump\u2019s direct messages could be covered by executive privilege if he was communicating about state business with other administration officials.<\/p>\n<p>The documents show the scope of the information sought by Smith, which also included information on any tweets that had been created or drafted and then subsequently deleted, as well as all searches connected to the account.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"More_from_The_Hill\"><\/span>More from The Hill<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">Much of the information sought from the search doesn\u2019t appear to have been referenced in the four-charge indictment handed down by a grand jury earlier this month, instead only referencing Trump\u2019s publicly available tweets.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Some of the arguments between the two parties centered on the extent of the evidence prosecutors used to back their request for a warrant to access the account, and Twitter sought to argue there was no need to shield the search from Trump given public information about the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t even know the half about the very warrant you are coming in here to delay the execution of,\u201d Howell said during one of the meetings with attorneys from DOJ and the company.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" the resistance from Twitter to turning over the subpoenaed materials, with DOJ attorney Thomas Windom complaining about earlier phone calls to address concerns prior to appearing in court.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI had felt like I had been getting nickeled-and-dimed for the prior 20 minutes of conversation. We need the material. We need it now. We needed it 13 days ago,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter ultimately appealed Howell\u2019s ruling on the matter only to be rebuffed by an appeals court, which said she rightly withheld details of the search from Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe district court found that there were \u2018reasonable grounds to believe\u2019 that disclosing the warrant to former President Trump \u2018would seriously jeopardize the ongoing investigation\u2019 by giving him \u2018an opportunity to destroy evidence, change patterns of behavior, [or] notify confederates,\u2019\u201d the U.S. Court of Appeals for D.C. noted in its ruling.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Trump has railed against the search of his Twitter account, accusing prosecutors of \u201cbreaking into\u201d his account despite their ability to convince a judge to sign off on a search warrant to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow dare lowlife prosecutor, Deranged Jack Smith, breaking into my Twitter account without informing me and, indeed, trying to completely hide this atrocity from me,\u201d Trump\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/110886100439412597\">posted to Truth Social<\/a>\u00a0this week. \u201cWhat could he possibly find out that is not already known.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013Updated at 11:48 a.m.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
