{"id":587435,"date":"2023-08-17T23:16:57","date_gmt":"2023-08-17T20:16:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/house-judiciary-subpoenas-garland-wray-over-contact-with-social-media-companies\/"},"modified":"2023-08-17T23:16:57","modified_gmt":"2023-08-17T20:16:57","slug":"house-judiciary-subpoenas-garland-wray-over-contact-with-social-media-companies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/house-judiciary-subpoenas-garland-wray-over-contact-with-social-media-companies\/","title":{"rendered":"#House Judiciary subpoenas Garland, Wray over contact with social media companies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/07\/Collage-Maker-12-Jul-2023-02-09-PM-3029.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The House Judiciary Committee is escalating its probe into Biden administration efforts to address disinformation, issuing subpoenas to Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo develop effective legislation, such as the possible enactment of new statutory limits on the Executive Branch\u2019s ability to work with <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> platforms and other companies to restrict the circulation of content and deplatform users, the Committee on the Judiciary must first understand the nature of this collusion and coercion,\u201d Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) wrote in the letters.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The Justice Department immediately pushed back on the heart of the Judiciary investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Department, including the FBI, does not censor content on social media platforms,\u201d the Justice Department said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrivate companies have the sole authority to make decisions to protect their platforms and users. As with all the committee\u2019s various requests, the department remains committed to working with the Committee to fulfill their informational needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The probe stems from a lawsuit led by the states of Missouri and Louisiana challenging the government\u2019s coordination with Big Tech companies over disinformation.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department argues that the effort ended over a year ago and did not undermine free speech. The choice of whether to remove any dangerous misinformation they flagged was ultimately up to the companies themselves, they said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Louisiana judge barred any government communications with social media companies for \u201cthe purpose of urging, encouraging, pressuring, or inducing in any manner the removal, deletion, suppression, or reduction of content containing protected free speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>However that decision was swiftly enjoined by a higher court after the Department of Justice (DOJ) challenged the sweeping ruling.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the case has become a clarion call for conservatives, particularly on the Judiciary panel, which frequently accuses the department of \u201cweaponization\u201d against right-leaning viewpoints.<\/p>\n<p>The subpoena reiterates a request from an April letter requesting all communications with social media companies under the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>It also asks for any emails dealing with alleged \u201cmisinformation,\u201d \u201cdisinformation,\u201d or \u201cmalinformation,\u201d as well as a list of all employees responsible for FBI and DOJ policies on the matter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
