\n Jan de Bont, the director of 1996\u2019s Twister<\/em>, is giving his thoughts on Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment\u2019s upcoming sequel.<\/p>\n

\n In an interview with Inverse<\/a><\/em>, published online Tuesday, the Speed<\/em> filmmaker said he wasn\u2019t consulted about the new movie and that he feels it will be completely different from his version, especially since visual effects technology<\/a> has changed so much since.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cWhen things fell from the sky, there were real things falling from a helicopter,\u201d de Bont said. \u201cIf you film a car escaping a tornado in a hail storm, it was real ice that came at us. It\u2019s a movie that cannot be remade \u2026 That would never, ever happ<\/a>en again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n He added that every shot they got \u201cwas a fortune\u201d because \u201cit would take three days to transfer all that information onto film. Right now it\u2019s fast, but in the beginning, it was super slow. And we had to be so careful to get the shots done before the movie opened.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The original Twister<\/em>, which starred Helen Hunt and\u00a0Bill Paxton, followed a storm-chasing couple who reunited to track the massive storm. The follow-up, directed by Lee Isaac Chung, is described as a \u201cnew chapter\u201d in the story with all new characters and is said to take place after the events of the first film. The sequel is set to star Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos.<\/p>\n

\n Though de Bont has the utmost respect for Chung and even enjoyed his 2020 drama Minari<\/em>, he admitted that he hasn\u2019t decided if he\u2019ll see the sequel. He added, \u201cI want to have somebody else see it first.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The director also had some skepticism about the recent trend he has seen of indie filmmakers jumping quickly to take on studio projects.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cDon\u2019t forget that the main reason they\u2019re finding younger, inexperienced people is they want to be able to fully control them,\u201d de Bont said. \u201cThey want them to have really good ADs, writers, producers, cinematographers so that they have all the help they can get. But ultimately, the studio is going to tell them what\u2019s in the movie. I know that firsthand.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Chung\u2019s Twister<\/em> is slated to hit theaters on July 19, 2024.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
