There\u2019s a lot going on in director\u00a0Denis Villeneuve<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0Dune<\/em><\/strong>. Based on the epic sci-fi novel from Frank Herbert, the story is not exactly what you\u2019d call \u201csimple,\u201d which is why it\u2019s not been the easiest material to bring to the screen. But in case you think this is just going to be a piece of big mindless blockbuster spectacle, the folks involved with the film want you to know that\u00a0Dune<\/em> has a lot on its mind. In a new interview, both Villeneuve and star Oscar Isaac<\/strong> talk about the theme<\/a>s that audiences can expect to run rampant through the flick.<\/p>\n

Empire\u2018s coverage of\u00a0Dune<\/em> continues with an interesting pair of quotes from star Oscar Isaac and director Denis Villeneuve. Isaac talks about how the film\u2019s \u201canti-capitalist and environmental\u201d themes make it doubly relevant to our current times, adding: \u201cIt\u2019s about the destiny of a people, and the different way that cultures have dominated other ones. How do a people respond when it\u2019s at the tipping point, when enough is enough, when they\u2019re exploited? All those things are things we\u2019re seeing around the world right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was already interested in seeing\u00a0Dune<\/em>, but having Isaac spell things out like that has me all the more intrigued. It\u2019s clear that everyone involved with this movie want to sell it as something more than big, loud blockbuster. It\u2019s a movie with important stuff on its mind \u2013 or so we\u2019re lead to believe. Keeping that theme going, Villeneuve added: \u201cSomething I deeply love in the book is that there was a strong balance between the masculine power and feminine power,\u201d and he made sure to keep that present in the film.<\/p>\n

The star-studded adaptation features\u00a0Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/strong>, Rebecca Ferguson<\/strong>, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin<\/strong>, Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/strong>, Dave Bautista<\/strong>, Stephen McKinley Henderson<\/strong>, Zendaya<\/strong>, David Dastmalchian<\/strong>, Chang Chen<\/strong>, Sharon Duncan-Brewster<\/strong>, Charlotte Rampling<\/strong>, Jason Momoa<\/strong>, and Javier Bardem<\/strong>, and is currently scheduled to hit theaters\u00a0December 18, 2020 \u2013 although that could always change. In the meantime, the first trailer is due to arrive online on September 9<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the movie, \u201cIn the far future of humanity, Duke Leto Atreides accepts stewardship of the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune, the only source of the most valuable substance in the universe, \u2018the spice,\u2019 a drug which extends human life, provides superhuman levels of thought, and makes foldspace travel<\/a> possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve never read\u00a0Dune<\/em>, and I\u2019ve only seen bits and pieces of the doomed David Lynch adaptation, so all of this feels fresh to me. Fingers crossed that Villeneuve\u2019s movie lives up to the hype.<\/p>\n
