The federal judge overseeing<\/a> Hunter Biden\u2019s case in Delaware dismissed two misdemeanor tax charges against him in a filing Thursday.<\/p>\n U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika dismissed the charges after David Weiss, the federal prosecutor leading the case against Biden, moved to dismiss them last week in order to bring charges in Washington, D.C., or California. Weiss was app<\/a>ointed as special counsel last Friday by Attorney General<\/a> Merrick Garland, after he asked for the role.<\/p>\n \u201cOn Tuesday of this week, Mr. Weiss advised me that in his judgment, his investigation had reached a stage at which he should continue his work as a special counsel, and he asked to be so appointed,\u201d Garland said in a statement on the appointment.<\/p>\n Weiss\u2019s appointment came amidst an unwinding plea deal in the case, which Biden\u2019s legal team said the government went back on and the Department of Justice said was not standing due to a nonapproval by a probation official. Many Republicans heavily criticized Weiss\u2019s appointment, with 2024 GOP presidential candidate and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott claiming the newly-minted special counsel \u201ccannot be trusted\u201d in an interview on Fox News<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n \u201cAppointing David as a special counsel is like keeping the concept of a [Justice Department] protecting Democrats while hunting Republicans,\u201d Scott said. \u201cI can\u2019t think of a more forceful sign that nothing has changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media<\/a> Inc.
