{"id":587833,"date":"2023-08-21T00:02:47","date_gmt":"2023-08-20T21:02:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/georgia-trump-indictment-invokes-justice-for-election-workers\/"},"modified":"2023-08-21T00:02:47","modified_gmt":"2023-08-20T21:02:47","slug":"georgia-trump-indictment-invokes-justice-for-election-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/georgia-trump-indictment-invokes-justice-for-election-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"#Georgia Trump indictment invokes justice for election workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/c67d969ebd00476ebe8b7d558fbeae35.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Sprinkled throughout the sweeping Georgia indictment covering every aspect of former President Trump\u2019s effort to overturn the state\u2019s 2020 election are references to one woman: poll worker Ruby Freeman.<\/p>\n<p>The Fulton County election staffer was aiding in counting ballots in the state when she was singled out by Trump and his then-attorney Rudy Giuliani and accused of mishandling ballots, sparking a wave of threats against Freeman and her daughter, Shaye Moss.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Freeman\u2019s name <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears some 40 times in the indictment, a detail Gwen Keyes Fleming, a former district attorney in Georgia, said reflects that there are \u201cthere are actual identifiable victims that the DA\u2019s office is sworn to protect\u201d in addition to the voters in the state whose will Trump sought to deny.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis indictment is an attempt to also recognize the alleged individual victimization of a poll worker who was simply trying to be of service to her county,\u201d Keyes Fleming said.<\/p>\n<p>Freeman spoke to investigators from the House committee reviewing the Jan. 6, 2021 attack, recounting how she and daughter, another former election worker, faced a harassment campaign following the accusations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know how it feels to have the president of the United States target you?\u201d Freeman asked in her deposition, aired during\u00a0one of the committee\u2019s public hearings. \u201cThe president of the United States is supposed to represent every American, not to target one.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Giuliani, a defendant in the case and Trump\u2019s longtime ally, claimed to have video evidence showing the mother-daughter pair scanning ballots hidden in suitcases under tables at Atlanta\u2019s State Farm Arena, according to a report by Georgia\u2019s State Election Board.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The alleged USB he accused them of passing between each other \u201cas if they were vials of heroin or cocaine\u201d was in fact just a ginger mint.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Trump would go on to call Freeman a \u201cprofessional vote scammer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caren Myers Morrison, a law professor at Georgia State University and former federal prosecutor, said the indictment takes seriously the harassment of election workers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can see there that [DA Fani Willis] is protecting the people of Fulton County, you know \u2014 this is one of her constituents,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The comments from Trump and Giuliani ignited a wave of threats against the women, and spurred the involvement of Trump allies who the indictment says were \u201cpurporting to offer her help\u201d in an effort to influence her statements about what happened at the arena.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2020, Illinois pastor Stephen Lee <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ed to Freeman\u2019s home and spoke with her neighbor, intending to mislead Freeman and \u201cin\ufb02uence her testimony in an of\ufb01cial proceeding,\u201d prosecutors allege in the indictment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They say Lee enlisted Black Voices for Trump leader Harrison Floyd to help persuade Freeman, who feared talking to Lee \u201cbecause he was a white man.\u201d Both Freeman and Moss are Black.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>A month later, Floyd recruited Trevian Kutti \u2014 a former publicist for rapper and Trump ally Ye, previously known as Kanye West \u2014 to join their efforts, according to the indictment. Kutti met with Freeman at the behest of an unidentified \u201chigh-profile individual\u201d and urged Freeman to confess to Trump\u2019s election fraud claims or go to jail within 48 hours,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/kanye-west-publicist-pressed-georgia-election-worker-confess-bogus-fraud-charges-2021-12-10\/\">Reuters reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eric Segall, another law professor at Georgia State University, said the role played by the election workers in the indictment\u2019s broader narrative creates a racial component to the case, one that is less present in the ex-president\u2019s other criminal cases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The women were an impediment to efforts to change election results in a state where civil rights organizing propelled the movement forward. At a future trial \u2014 which would likely be televised, thanks to Georgia\u2019s court rules \u2014 race would play an inevitable role, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe have these white, northern\u2026lawyer, powerful men-types, intimidating these Black women,\u201d Segall said. \u201cIt has a symbolism about it, and images can be really powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The false claims of election fraud that rapidly spread through Trump\u2019s orbit and right-wing spaces caused Freeman and Moss to face harassment and threats they have said altered their lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t do nothing anymore. I don\u2019t want to go anywhere. I second guess everything I do. It\u2019s affected my life in a major way. In every way. All because of lies,\u201d Moss\u00a0testified during a Jan. 6 committee hearing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Keyes Fleming said those types of details could personalize the case and be compelling for jurors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany jurors can see themselves as that ordinary citizen who\u2019s just trying to support voting rights or trying to volunteer for the greater good in some way, shape or form. And then \u2026 they find themselves in the crosshairs of vitriolic lies and attempts to undermine their credibility,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my experience, testimony like that can be persuasive.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Freeman and Moss have sued Giuliani themselves for defamation over his election fraud claims, which a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of probes led by\u00a0three law enforcement agencies\u00a0found \u201cwere false and unsubstantiated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Giuliani\u00a0wrote in court filings\u00a0he will \u201cnot contest\u201d that his statements were \u201cfalse\u201d and \u201ccarry meaning that is defamatory,\u201d but maintained that they were \u201cconstitutionally protected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Keyes Fleming said there\u2019s another important distinction about having the false statements about Freeman addressed in a criminal case versus a civil defamation suit where the two women could receive monetary damages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not about reimbursement \u2026.
