{"id":588288,"date":"2023-08-24T04:01:35","date_gmt":"2023-08-24T01:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/why-the-gop-debate-is-being-held-in-milwaukee\/"},"modified":"2023-08-24T04:01:35","modified_gmt":"2023-08-24T01:01:35","slug":"why-the-gop-debate-is-being-held-in-milwaukee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/why-the-gop-debate-is-being-held-in-milwaukee\/","title":{"rendered":"#Why the GOP debate is being held in Milwaukee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/TOP-MilwaukeeDebate_082223_AP_Morry-Gash.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Eight qualifying Republican candidates will take the stage together in Milwaukee on Wednesday night for the party\u2019s first presidential primary debate, gathering in the key swing state for the kickoff event of the race for the GOP nomination.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Republican National Committee (RNC) voted in February to hold the first debate of the 2024 cycle in Wisconsin\u2019s biggest city, the same place it plans to hold the Republican National Convention next July.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        The Hill Elections 2024 coverage<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cMilwaukee is a world-class city, and we are eager to see it shine in the spotlight come 2024,\u201d RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GOPChairwoman\/status\/1555590124049670144?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">said<\/a> in 2022, after after picking the city for the convention over runner-up Nashville.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Former President Trump, GOP frontrunner, won Wisconsin by a slim margin in 2016 \u2014 but lost the battleground state to President Biden by a similarly tight margin when he ran for reelection in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Badger State re-elected Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in the 2022 midterms, beating a Trump-backed opponent by just a few points. Since assuming the governorship in 2019, Evers has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Party_control_of_Wisconsin_state_government\">counterbalanced<\/a> the GOP-controlled Wisconsin state legislature.<\/p>\n<p>But despite Evers\u2019 win in the gubernatorial race, Republican Sen. Ron Johnson, who was viewed during the midterms as the Democrats\u2019 best chance of ousting an incumbent Republican in the upper chamber, was also re-elected to his Senate seat last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Milwaukee was also among the several cities that hosted a Republican primary debate during the 2016 cycle, when Trump ran for his first term in office. <\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Milwaukee hosted the Democratic National Convention, though the event was moved largely online due to the pandemic. With next year\u2019s Republican convention, the city is the first to host back-to-back national conventions since New York City hosted the 1976 and 1980 Democratic conventions. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The current Milwaukee mayor, Cavalier Johnson (D),  was elected the city\u2019s first Black mayor in April 2022. After <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MayorOfMKE\/status\/1691555997079232866?s=20\">welcoming<\/a> Biden to the city earlier this month, he has also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MayorOfMKE\/status\/1694426850590622147?s=20\">celebrated<\/a> the Republican debate and convention plans.<\/p>\n<p>The presidential candidates who met the RNC\u2019s slate of debate criteria \u2014 including polling and donor requirements, plus a candidate pledge \u2014 will get behind podiums at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee for the event, to be aired on Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> at 9 p.m. Eastern.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump will be notably absent from the debate stage.
