Seems doubtful<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/DeSantisChristieScottGetty.jpeg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Eight Republican presidential candidates took the stage in Milwaukee on Wednesday night for the party\u2019s first primary debate of the 2024 cycle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> hosts Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum moderated a raucous debate, struggling at times to rein the candidates in and keep them to time limits as they sparred over topics like Ukraine and abortion \u2014 and knocked each other over their credentials and stances.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Former President Trump, the front-runner of the GOP race, declined to join them after much suspense over whether he\u2019d participate, leaving his fellow competitors to jostle in what many see as a race for second place and what Trump\u2019s campaign has framed as a fight to be his future running mate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are five takeaways from the first GOP presidential debate:<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pence_surprises_as_center_of_debate\"><\/span><strong>Pence surprises as center of debate\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Former Vice President Mike Pence delivered a more aggressive and memorable performance on Wednesday night than many expected, touting his experience in the Trump administration as he vies for the Oval Office against his former running mate.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the night, Pence got into a number of back-and-forths with the 38-year-old Vivek Ramaswamy, an upstart rival whom the former vice president swiped at over his relatively young age.<\/p>\n<p>Pence was also the main focus of a question about his actions on Jan. 6, 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The candidates were asked whether they think Pence \u201cdid the right thing\u201d on Jan. 6 in moving forward with the certification of the 2020 presidential election after he and Trump lost to President Biden.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Pence \u201cdeserves our thanks as Americans\u201d for his actions that day, \u201cfor putting his oath of office and the Constitution of the United States before personal, political and unfair pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Challenged by Ramaswamy to promise to pardon Trump if the former president is convicted in one of his ongoing legal battles, Pence avoided a commitment, saying, \u201cI don\u2019t know why you assume Donald Trump will be convicted of these crimes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, despite his strong showing on Wednesday night, Pence is unlikely to see much movement in the primary. He\u2019s polling behind the former president and a handful of his fellow candidates and has so far drawn relatively little donor interest.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ramaswamy_becomes_No_1_target\"><\/span><strong>Ramaswamy becomes No. 1 target<\/strong><strong><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ramaswamy was a target in some of the night\u2019s most contentious exchanges, taking heat from Christie, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) and Pence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the only person on the stage who isn\u2019t bought and paid for so I can say this: The climate change agenda is a hoax,\u201d Ramaswamy said after candidates were asked whether or not they believed human behavior is causing climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Christie interrupted to say he\u2019d \u201chad enough already tonight of a guy who sounds like ChatGPT,\u201d and knocked Ramaswamy\u2019s opening line from earlier in the program.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe last person in one of these debates \u2026 who stood in the middle of the stage and said, \u2018What is a skinny guy with an odd last name doing up here?\u2019 was Barack Obama. And I am afraid we are dealing with the same type of amateur standing on the stage tonight,\u201d Christie said.<\/p>\n<p>Haley torched the novice candidate over his stance that the U.S. shouldn\u2019t continue to back Ukraine against Russia\u2019s ongoing war.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no foreign policy experience and it shows,\u201d she said amid a fiery back-and-forth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>After Ramaswamy suggested that \u201cthis isn\u2019t that complicated,\u201d Pence touted his experience and argued that \u201cnow is not the time for on-the-job training.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t need to bring in a rookie,\u201d Pence said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arent knock at the youngest candidate on stage.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DeSantis_fades_into_the_background\"><\/span><strong>DeSantis fades into the background<\/strong><strong><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Despite consistently polling as the top Republican presidential contender behind Trump, DeSantis mostly failed to make an impression during the debate. He notably avoided many direct attacks like those lobbed at Ramaswamy, who has risen to third place in some polling as DeSantis has appeared to slip.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Candidates\u2019 squabbles with Ramaswamy, some of which resulted in rebuttal time for the entrepreneur, cut down DeSantis\u2019s screentime.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis also skirted around a couple yes-or-no questions asked to the group of White House hopefuls. Asked to raise their hands if they believed human behavior causes climate change, the governor interrupted by saying, \u201cLook, we\u2019re not schoolchildren. Let\u2019s have the debate. I mean, I\u2019m happy to take it to start.\u201d He did not raise his hand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether Pence did the right thing on Jan. 6, DeSantis said \u201cthis election\u00a0is not about January 6th of 2021. It is about January 20th of 2025 when the next president is gonna take office.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No_breakout_moments_for_many\"><\/span><strong>No breakout moments for many<\/strong><strong><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While some candidates stood out on stage, both for their stances and for their war of words with competitors, others didn\u2019t secure significant breakout moments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott both avoided confrontations with other candidates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson was the only candidate to start to raise his hand when candidates were asked to do so if they believe human behavior is behind climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He and Christie were also the only candidates to keep their hands down when the White House hopefuls were asked whether or not they\u2019d follow through on their candidate loyalty pledge and back Trump.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Will_race_change_Seems_doubtful\"><\/span><strong>Will race change? Seems doubtful<\/strong><strong><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Certain candidates might get a boost from their crowd-pleasing moments during the two-hour primary debate, but it seems doubtful the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> dynamic of the race will change significantly.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of Wednesday night\u2019s debate, strategists predicted the GOP race would be little changed by the first debate. Many see Trump as the party\u2019s likely winner and the debate as a contest for who can stand out as a possible running mate for the eventual nominee.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump has long boasted a significant lead in the polls that could be hard for the other candidates to catch up to, and his base has continued to support him even as he\u2019s beleaguered by legal woes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The former president, who was absent from the debate stage, didn\u2019t emerge as a central topic until the second half of the program, but he\u2019s also set to suck up much of the public\u2019s attention again on Thursday as he\u2019s expected to\u00a0surrender\u00a0to authorities in Georgia for the case he faces there related to alleged efforts to intervene in the state\u2019s 2020 election results.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
