{"id":588366,"date":"2023-08-24T18:35:56","date_gmt":"2023-08-24T15:35:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/dhs-fema-organizing-extreme-heat-summit\/"},"modified":"2023-08-24T18:35:56","modified_gmt":"2023-08-24T15:35:56","slug":"dhs-fema-organizing-extreme-heat-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/dhs-fema-organizing-extreme-heat-summit\/","title":{"rendered":"#DHS, FEMA organizing extreme heat summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/AP23226594410927-e1692891343160.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will hold a virtual summit on extreme heat preparedness Monday, DHS announced Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell will host local community leaders, who are set to offer pointers on extreme heat resilience strategies.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAs extreme heat, worsened by the climate crisis, threatens the lives, safety, and security of communities everywhere, the Biden-Harris Administration is working across all levels of government to ensure communities have resources to protect the public and our nation\u2019s critical infrastructure,\u201d Mayorkas said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are sensible, constructive measures that communities can take to mitigate the impacts of extreme heat,\u201d Mayorkas added. \u201cBy sharing information,\u00a0planning ahead\u00a0with concrete steps, understanding available federal resources, and working together to help the most vulnerable people in their communities, Americans can prepare, adapt, and respond to these weather-related threats to the health, safety, and security of our communities.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mayorkas\u2019 announcement comes as numerous parts of the U.S. have seen unprecedented heat, and the record for hottest recorded day in Earth\u2019s history was broken at least twice in July. In late July, 60 percent of the U.S. was under either a heat advisory or flood watch or warning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ephtracking.cdc.gov\/Applications\/heatTracker\/\">estimates<\/a>\u00a0that extreme heat kills around 700 people a year in the U.S., and the number is even higher in Europe, where residents are far less likely to have air conditioning.
