{"id":588380,"date":"2023-08-24T20:36:10","date_gmt":"2023-08-24T17:36:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/europe-faces-decapitated-wagner-group-with-caution-questions\/"},"modified":"2023-08-24T20:36:10","modified_gmt":"2023-08-24T17:36:10","slug":"europe-faces-decapitated-wagner-group-with-caution-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/europe-faces-decapitated-wagner-group-with-caution-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"#Europe faces \u2018decapitated\u2019 Wagner Group with caution, questions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/wagner-group-members_062423getty_wagner-group-russia.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>VILNIUS, Lithuania \u2014 European officials are cautiously watching the fallout from the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arent death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, whose short-lived attempt to overthrow the Russian defense leadership in late June put him in the crosshairs of Russian President Vladimir Putin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prigozhin\u2019s reported death on Wednesday \u2014 in a plane crash on a sunny, cloudless day <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing from Moscow to St. Petersburg \u2014 was not particularly surprising, coming on the two-month anniversary of his mutiny attempt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>However, it has still raised a flurry of questions, such as how Prigozhin\u2019s death changes the security situation in Europe and if there\u2019s any opportunity for Ukraine or Putin\u2019s other foes within and outside Russia to exploit the situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether with our neighbors we are closely monitoring situation around the Wagner troops,\u201d a Baltic official told The Hill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny provocations by the Wagner troops along our borders would be met with a firm response. We consider the deployment of the Wagner troops in Belarus as an escalation by the Russian Federation and Belarus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first reaction from Ukrainian officials was a pointed message to the West and its supporters to hold back from pushing Kyiv into negotiations with Moscow, pointing to a deal brokered by Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko that ended Prigozhin\u2019s march on Moscow in late June, supposedly in exchange for amnesty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrigozhin signed a special death warrant for himself the moment he believed in Lukashenko\u2019s bizarre \u2018guarantees\u2019 and Putin\u2019s equally absurd \u2018word of honor,\u2019\u201d Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the Head of the Office of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Podolyak_M\/status\/1694417568906273210?s=20\">wrote on X<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA good lesson to all the \u2018doves of peace\u2019 who still believe in the possibility of negotiating with Putin under the condition of a \u2018ceasefire and arms supply termination.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>An estimated few thousand of Prigozhin\u2019s Wagner forces were transferred to Belarus as part of the deal brokered by Lukashenko, although many details of the deal remain unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Baltic states are watching closely whether those Wagner troops remain in Belarus. Their arrival in the beginning of July prompted a heightened security posture to protect against any provocations that may occur across the border.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Belaruski Hajun, an activist group that tracks troop movements within Belarus\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/motolko.help\/ru-articles\/lager-chvk-vagner-pod-osipovichami-demontiruyut-chto-dalshe\/\">wrote on Telegram<\/a>\u00a0that at least two camps associated with Wagner fighters were being dismantled, but that these operations were underway between the end of July and August.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland share the largest share of the border with Belarus, where commercial trade and flow of people transit over multiple crossings. Lithuania last week announced it would close two out of its six border crossings with Belarus in an effort to impose more control over the flow of goods and people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The border closures prompted the U.S. Embassy of Belarus, which operates in Vilnius, to\u00a0issue a security alert\u00a0for Americans to depart Belarus im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely.<\/p>\n<p>Prigozhin\u2019s death leaves open the leadership of the Wagner group. The private military company was on the frontlines of Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine, leading the successful but costly effort to seize Bakhmut. However, its mercenary forces withdrew from Ukraine around the same time as the short-lived rebellion and it\u2019s unclear if they might return.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Wagner also operates as private security contractors in countries in Africa, and its forces have been accused of heinous abuses against civilians and exploitation of natural resources in mining businesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWagner Group was decapitated,\u201d said Wojciech Lorenz, head of the International Security Program of the Warsaw-based Polish Institute of International Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will limit its usefulness as a tool of psychological operations against Poland from Belarus. But Russia will still need private military companies to act mainly in Africa so Wagner Group, even if rebranded as other groups, will remain active threatening Western interests and security.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Wagner Telegram channels have pinned the blame for the crash on Russian defense forces, raising some speculation of Wagner\u2019s remaining leaders seeking to avenge\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prigozhin\u2019s death, perhaps with a second march to Moscow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, experts and officials are skeptical of such a possibility given the group\u2019s relative state of disarray.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>After the mutiny attempt, Putin called for formally integrating Wagner forces into the Russian military.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ariel Cohen, nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council\u2019s Eurasia Center, said that loyalty among Wagner forces towards Prigozhin is likely to make it more difficult for Putin to integrate these forces into the Russian army.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe question now arises: What will happen with the Wagner Group assets in Russia, Belarus, African countries, and Syria?\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The U.S. and other NATO allies have warned against Wagner forces threatening territory of the alliance, saying that they viewed no distinction between the private military company and the Russian military.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, European capitals were largely muted in their reactions the day after Prigozhin\u2019s reported death.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The United Kingdom\u2019s Ministry of Defense, which provides daily, defense intelligence updates on Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine and the state of Russia, did not mention Prigozhin\u2019s death in its latest bulletin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it noted how Putin made a visit to Rostov-on-Don on August 19, the headquarters for the Russian military\u2019s southern operations against Ukraine and that was seized by Prigozhin in his mutiny attempt on June 24.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPutin highly likely wishes to project his authority and to portray the senior military command as functioning as usual,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DefenceHQ\/status\/1694582142695580102?s=20\">the assessment read<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tatiana Stanovaya, Senior fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Stanovaya\/status\/1694454748093485425?s=20\">wrote on X<\/a>\u00a0that for Putin, \u201cPrigozhin\u2019s death should serve as a lesson to any potential successors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see no reason why Putin would need Prigozhin in any capacity after the mutiny,\u201d she wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrigozhin was only needed for some time after the mutiny to smoothly dismantle Wagner in Russia and move it to Belarus under new leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
