First came the March arrest of Andrew Tate, the British-American influencer who racked up <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2022\/aug\/06\/andrew-tate-violent-misogynistic-world-of-tiktok-new-star\">billions of TikTok views advocating violent misogyny<\/a> \u2014 \u201cI think he\u2019s a positive role model for men,\u201d Akademiks said of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-65959097\">the alleged rapist and human trafficker<\/a> during <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Jhu07pECLk0\">an early August stream<\/a>. Then Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison this month after he was found guilty of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot in 2020. Over the course of the trial, Akademiks took to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> time and time again to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/news\/megan-thee-stallion-tory-lanez-dj-akademiks-lawsuit-b2022104.html\">antagonize Megan<\/a> and defend Lanez with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayplayer.com\/news\/megan-thee-stallion-rips-dj-akademiks-for-lying-about-tory-lanez-case.html\">unverified (and quickly deleted)<\/a> trial \u201cinsights.\u201d Backed into a corner, he still insists that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/news\/akademiks-doubts-tory-lanez-megan-stallion-shooting\">maybe Tory didn\u2019t do it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Though he has been one of Tory Lanez&#8217;s most <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hotnewhiphop.com\/701723-dj-akademiks-megan-thee-stallion-lawsuit-hip-hop-news\">prominent<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legalaffairsandtrials.com\/p\/from-dj-akademiks-to-casey-anthonys\">supporters<\/a> over the past three years, Akademiks is far from the only one. R<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ers from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/tory-lanez-and-dababy-tried-to-ambush-megan-thee-stallion-on-stage-court-docs-say\">DaBaby<\/a> all the way up to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/megan-thee-stallion-slams-drake-lyrics-about-her-shooting-2022-11\">Drake<\/a> closed ranks to support Lanez in their music. Online platforms including The Shade Room, Daily Loud, and XXL <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/megan-thee-stallion-trial-exposes-how-hip-hop-blogs-fail-black-women\">posted about the case as if Megan Thee Stallion was the one on trial<\/a>. And beyond the blogs, we can\u2019t ignore the everyday, garden-variety morons who cracked jokes at Megan\u2019s expense and swore Tory\u2019s innocence despite the mountain of evidence to the contrary.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cThere&#8217;s so much interest in this case that it just leaves this big, open space for blogs and almost malicious bad actors to come in and spread misinformation,\u201d Meghann M. Cuniff, a courtroom reporter who followed the trial closely, said in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/tory-lanez-trial-meghann-m-cuniff-court-reporter-twitter\">an interview<\/a> after Lanez\u2019s sentencing. \u201cNot only malicious bad actors, but people who just don&#8217;t really have the training and sophistication to understand what they&#8217;re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-252079\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>The scarce supply of consistent, well-reported rap journalism is becoming a crisis<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-252070\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Hip-hop, like the world at large, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/culture\/archive\/2020\/07\/the-women-who-still-dont-matter-to-hip-hop\/613681\/\">doesn\u2019t really care about violence against women<\/a>. It\u2019s not uncommon for artists with serious allegations and\/or convictions to enjoy thriving careers. Off the top of my head: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/dr-dre-grammy-award-dee-barnes-reacts-abuse-1234675681\/\">Dr. Dre<\/a>, Kodak Black, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2019\/03\/05\/fabolous-deal-felony-domestic-violence-emily-b-video\/\">Fabolous<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/xxxtentacion-confessed-to-domestic-abuse-secret-recording-listen\/\">XXXTentacion<\/a>, Playboi Carti, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/exclaim.ca\/music\/article\/rich_the_kid_accused_of_domestic_abuse_by_estranged_wife\">Rich the Kid<\/a>, Lil Uzi Vert, and Soulja Boy. Sexism and celebrity privilege are neither new nor exclusive to rap music, but the genre\u2019s overt criminalization has made fans understandably wary of the justice system: when <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/4adg79\/inside-the-nypds-war-against-drill-rap\">a major police force like the NYPD has a documented history of targeting rappers<\/a>, it\u2019s easy to dismiss any and all legal proceedings as inherently biased.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            The institutional mistrust extends to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> organizations, casualties of the algorithmic optimization of the 2010s. Local journalism is in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/07\/04\/local-newspapers-news-deserts\">steep decline across the nation<\/a>; cash flows to digital media have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/21\/media\/buzzfeed-news-digital-media-demise\/index.html\">dried up<\/a> in sync with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/29\/tech\/big-tech-ad-market-decline\/index.html\">the wider tech economy<\/a>. Arts and culture reporting is often first on the chopping block when it comes to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/06\/13\/media-job-cuts-record\">cost-cutting<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/07\/how-neutral-layoffs-disproportionately-affect-women-and-minorities\">layoffs disproportionately affect Black writers and reporters<\/a>. The net result is less and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/epdgen\/the-co-opting-of-rap-criticism-is-about-more-than-just-music\">lower-quality coverage<\/a> of rap and hip-hop.<\/p>\n<p>            As coverage at mainstream outlets has decreased, the void has been filled by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/music\/la-et-ms-instagram-hip-hop-20180704-story.html\">content creators and faux-journalistic outlets on Instagram and YouTube<\/a>. Algorithms optimized for attention, good or bad, exacerbated and encouraged voyeuristic appetites for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/defector.com\/how-did-hip-hop-media-get-so-bad\">violence as spectacle<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theringer.com\/2017\/3\/8\/16046476\/dj-vlad-investigative-journalist-vince-staples-c701ef4dc55d\">rappers as criminal caricatures<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/white-nationalism\/no-jumper-podcast-mainstreaming-neo-nazis-and-hate-figures-its-audience-millions\">reactionary politics<\/a>. Now, the same impulses are trickling down to newer platforms and younger audiences: when Tory became too toxic for mainstream media, he retreated to Twitter, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/music\/a\/cmplxjoshua-espinoza\/megan-the-stallion-tory-lanez-instagram-response-to-shooting-case\">Instagram<\/a>, and Twitch for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/news\/id.67748\/title.tory-lanez-brags-about-recent-lawyer-meeting-with-sinister-emojis-as-megan-thee-stallion-case-drags-on\">support<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-252071\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            \u201cI was surprised at how focused he seemed to be online,\u201d Cuniff told <i>GQ<\/i>\u2019s Heven Haile. \u201dIt makes sense when you&#8217;re an entertainer and your whole livelihood depends on popularity and people being drawn to you. But it doesn&#8217;t matter in the courtroom at all. I was like, \u2018These guys seem completely gassed up on Instagram, [Shade Room] comments, and the jury.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            In 2021, Lanez appeared on Adin Ross\u2019s livestream. Ross is close with Andrew Tate and, like No Jumper, has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/adin-ross-andrew-tate-white-supremacists-1234705845\/\">previously platformed white supremacists<\/a>; Lanez\u2019s freestyle on Ross\u2019s stream ended up <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/Tory-lanez-she-make-it-clap-freestyle-lyrics\">trending on TikTok<\/a>. Kai Cenat, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/08\/04\/twitch-streamer-kai-cenat-influencer-giveaway-union-square-riot\/\">one of the biggest streamers in the world<\/a>, was hanging out with Tory Lanez just last year; Cenat, along with fellow megastreamer IShowSpeed, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dexerto.com\/entertainment\/kai-cenat-ishowspeed-join-rumble-for-exclusive-livestreaming-show-2145097\/\">recently inked a deal with right-wing livestream platform Rumble<\/a> (Akademiks has also signed onto the controversial platform, known for hosting conservative pundits and \u201dfunded in part by tech billionaire Peter Thiel and Republican Ohio senator J.D. Photo by Amy Sussman\/Getty Images<br \/>\n    <\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <span class=\"credit\"><br \/>\n      \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-252080\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>Local journalism is in steep decline across the nation&#8230; The net result is less and lower-quality coverage of rap and hip-hop.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-252072\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Rap culture\u2019s close affinity with capitalism and conservatism isn\u2019t exactly novel, but with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/the-reidout\/reidout-blog\/biden-crack-pipes-black-tabloids-rcna15702\">prominent Black tabloids<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thetriibe.com\/2022\/09\/who-is-behind-the-hip-hop-blogs-spreading-fake-news-about-o-block-parkway-gardens-on-social-media\/\">hip-hop blogs<\/a> promoting and aggregating misinformation, the scarce supply of consistent, well-reported rap journalism is becoming a crisis. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/13\/technology\/misinformation-integrity-institute-report.html\">Twitter and TikTok<\/a> were already tilted in favor of misinformation, but pushes for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/technology\/monetising-hate-unease-misinformation-swirls-twitter-elon-musk\/article66746374.ece\">increased monetization<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/05\/26\/tech-companies-are-laying-off-their-ethics-and-safety-teams-.html\">tech sector layoffs<\/a> have allowed bad actors to run rampant. And while readers with longer memories may recall a time before every music website looked like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/18\/arts\/music\/popcast-internet-hip-hop-media.html\">a hybrid of TMZ and PR Newswire<\/a>, they\u2019d be hard-pressed to find a contemporary alternative to the SEO-optimized slop churned out for ad impressions just about everywhere. That\u2019s left <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/nbcblk\/tory-lanez-trial-bloggers-gossip-megan-thee-stallion-rcna61600\">plenty of room<\/a> for unscrupulous infotainment bloggers to stir up outrage and farm clicks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            \u201cWhen I talk to people about the data around<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/jun\/30\/black-women-murder-rate-data-stats-study\"> the prevalence and pervasiveness of violence against Black women<\/a>,&#8221; Ohio State University Professor Treva Lindsey told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/23494788\/megan-thee-stallion-tory-lanez-assault-trial\">Vox<\/a> back in December, &#8220;their jaws drop because they don\u2019t really conceive of it as an everyday occurrence\u2026 And so they treat it as something to choose a side on&#8230; The broad consideration here is that 40 percent of Black women at some point in their lifetime will experience some form of physical violence\u2026 getting people to understand the gravity of this problem, the reality of interpersonal violence, and its frequency is an important part of this work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            In May, Megan Thee Stallion wrote about the personal toll of the case in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elle.com\/culture\/celebrities\/a43567508\/megan-thee-stallion-tory-lanez-case-interview-2023\/\">an editorial for <i>Elle<\/i><\/a>. \u201cFor years, my attacker tried to leverage social media to take away my power,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI persevered, even as people treated my trauma like a running joke.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cFirst, there were conspiracy theories that I was never shot. Then came the false narratives that my former best friend shot me. Even some of my peers in the music industry piled on with memes, jokes, and sneak disses&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            \u201cWe can\u2019t control what others think, especially when the lies are juicier than the truth. But as a society, we must create safer environments for women to come forward about violent behavior without fear of retaliation\u2026 We must do more than <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/breonna-taylor-police.html\">say her name<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Women in hip-hop deserve better.
