R. Kelly has been locked up for quite some time now, but his legal woes have continued with the garnishment of his extensive royalties to give the victims of his sex abuse crimes the restitution that they\u2019ve asked for in court.<\/p>\n

According to Variety<\/a><\/em>, U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly signed an order demanding that Kelly and his label, Universal Music Group, turn over more than $500,000 in royalties. The order, which was signed on Wednesday (August 23), previously demanded that the \u201cIgnition\u201d singer turn over $28,000, which was in his prison canteen.<\/p>\n

Universal Music Group declined Variety<\/em>\u2018s request for comment, as did Kelly\u2019s team.<\/p>\n

Last month, prosecutors in Brooklyn, NY, filed a writ of continuing garnishment, which is what\u2019s filed by creditors (in this case, the government, acting on behalf of R. Kelly\u2019s victims) against debtors (R. Kelly\u2019s record labels) to collect money owed in a judgment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe outstanding balance on the aforesaid judgment is $504,289.73, including interest, as of June 1, 2023. Interest is continuing to accrue,\u201d read the documents filed against Kelly\u2019s label Sony Music Entertainment.<\/p>\n

The courts filed the writ of continuing garnishment against R. Kelly\u2019s label because it is \u201cin possession of property\u201d belonging to the disgraced singer that can be used to pay down the debt, if not eliminate it altogether.<\/p>\n

In March, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled Heather Williams was entitled to access the disgraced singer\u2019s label fund\u00a0\u2014 which was reportedly valued at $1.5million in 2020, according to\u00a0Billboard<\/a><\/em>\u00a0\u2014 before Midwest Commercial Funding, a property manager that won its own separate $3.5million ruling against Kelly over unpaid rent on a Chicago studio.<\/p>\n

Williams won a $4million judgment against Kelly\u00a0in 2020 after filing a civil lawsuit against him a year prior. She alleged that when she was 16, the \u201cIgnition\u201d hitmaker lured her to his studio on a promise she could be in a music video and then had sex with her multiple times as a minor.<\/p>\n

The state high court\u2019s decision on Thursday upheld an earlier ruling by a lower court that Williams \u2014 and not Midwest Commercial \u2014 should be given priority to access the royalties because she was the first to properly file a demand for the money.<\/p>\n

R. Kelly was sentenced to two decades behind bars in February by a Chicago judge for his federal sexual assault case.<\/p>\n

At the sentencing, which took place on February 22, the judge ruled that all but one year would be served concurrent to the\u00a030-year sentence he\u2019s currently serving in New York after being found guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking.<\/p>\n

A grand jury ultimately\u00a0found the Chicago native guilty on six of the 13 federal charges\u00a0which included three child pornography charges for sexually abusing four girls \u2014 three of whom were minors.<\/p>\n

They also found Kelly guilty of making three videos of himself sexually assaulting his 14-year-old goddaughter, which resulted in another three charges for producing sex tapes with a minor.<\/p>\n

The ruling came shortly after a\u00a0series<\/a> of pending sex abuse charges against R. Kelly in Cook County, Illinois were dropped. The singer was indicted in 2019 on 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving four alleged victims, three of whom were under the age of consent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
