\n FORT WORTH, Texas \u2014 All 148 players who registered for the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club and their caddies were tested for COVID-19 upon arrival, and every one tested negative.<\/p>\n

For the PGA Tour, and particularly commissioner Jay Monahan, that was a significant first hurdle as the sport returns to tournament play this week for the first time in three months.<\/p>\n

Monahan on Wednesday said he was \u201ccertainly pleased\u2019\u2019 with that result, but added, \u201cIf there\u2019s one thing you learn as you look back over the last 90 days and you go forward, there\u2019s steps that you take. We\u2019ve passed some important hurdles. But now we get inside the field of play. Now you think about all the things that we\u2019re asking our players and caddies and everybody that\u2019s here in this small bubble to do, we need to execute on that.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Monahan was asked if there were a threshold number of positive test cases \u2014 should any occur \u2014 that the Tour has set which would be considered an outbreak and threaten a tournament, or even the season, going forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the short answer is that there is no \u2018if this, then that,\u2019 \u201d he said. \u201cI think you just have to be in a position where you\u2019ve got to be sensible about the reality where you are and what\u2019s happ<\/a>ening in that market around you and how you\u2019re looking at where we are at that point in time. Because there is no way to completely eliminate the risk, there\u2019s also uncertainty about how you\u2019re going to respond.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cBut as we sit here today, every single player and caddie that came through our testing facility here in Fort Worth has tested negative.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Monahan defended the no-spectator policy for the first four events, saying, \u201cThis is about a sustained return. Yes, we could have fans to the venue. We love the fans here in Fort Worth. It\u2019s hard for us not to have them. But I think they know how important it is for us, the PGA Tour to be here with this quality of field in Fort Worth sharing PGA Tour golf with the world, and we\u2019ll be back here with all of our fans hopefully next year.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Monahan said he\u2019s been in constant contact with commissioners from other sports leagues, such as the NBA, NHL, and he feels a sense of responsibility to get this right.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think everybody is watching,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cEveryone wants to see this go off exceedingly well and for us to accomplish the same goal they have, which is a safe and healthy return, and to do it in a manner that is actually recognizing the challenges that this virus presents.\u2019\u2019\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
