That which we call a pickle by any other name would still taste as sour, no? Well, the internet craves a more definitive answer to that question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">On Aug. 12, TikTok user Jesse Banwell <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@jessebanwell\/video\/7266592231941983534\">shared a curious experience<\/a> he and his family had one afternoon with a jar of what he thought were pickles. In the video, which garnered over 1.4 million views, the father recalls how a simple discovery by his child led to what is now being referred to online as #Picklegate.<\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-widget embedWidget embed-widget--medium\"><\/section>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cSo, here\u2019s what h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened,\u201d Banwell says in his now-viral video. He added that he was making sandwiches for his kids when his youngest wanted to write down \u201cpickles\u201d on a piece of paper, so he looked at a jar to see how to spell it. \u201cHe couldn\u2019t find the word on the jar anywhere. So I went and looked and sure enough, it does not say \u2018pickle\u2019 anywhere on this jar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">After looking at his jar and lid of Claussen Kosher Dill Sandwich Slices, Banwell checked another brand of pickles in his fridge, a \u201chuge\u201d jar of Mt. Olive pickles he recently purchased. \u201cAnd guess what? It also doesn\u2019t say (pickle anywhere),\u201d says Banwell, astonished.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Now on a mission, Banwell checked another well-known brand of pickles, Vlasic, to see if <em>its <\/em>jars contain those six letters, and found out they don\u2019t either. An internet search to find the reason only pulled up a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/mildlyinteresting\/comments\/bt10cf\/this_pickle_jar_doesnt_say_the_word_pickles\/\">Reddit post<\/a> where another person was befuddled by the word missing from a jar of Claussen Kosher Dill Spears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t find any real information on why they don\u2019t say pickles on any of the jars. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a coincidence. There has to be some reason for it,\u201d Banwell concludes. \u201cIf anybody knows, fill me in.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Picklegate_theories\"><\/span><strong>#Picklegate theories<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">One father\u2019s question seems to have dug yet another TikTok rabbit hole for users to go down, with many folks posting under the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/picklegate\">hashtag #Picklegate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">TODAY.com has reached out to Banwell for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Banwell himself has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@jessebanwell\/video\/7268097935030750510\">posted updates<\/a> that leave viewers with more questions than definitive answers, leading folks in the TikToker\u2019s comments and beyond to theorize about why the word \u201cpickle\u201d is omitted from so many briny jars of joy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cPickles have to have dill in the ingredients list,\u201d theorized one commenter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cpickle is a term used to describe preservation technique but has become common term, like kleenex for all box tissues,\u201d posited another commenter. (They\u2019re mostly right about that: While pickling is a process <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/pickles-history-timeline\">dating back to ancient times<\/a>, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/word\/pickle\">first recorded use of the word meaning \u201ccucumber preserved in pickle<\/a>\u201d was in 1707.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cTo be called pickles they need to be from the Pickle Region in France,\u201d joked yet another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But most folks maintain a prevailing theory: That since it\u2019s obvious that a jar of pickles contains pickles, there\u2019s no need to reiterate what\u2019s right in front of you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt says \u2018pickles\u2019 all over their websites. It might be a graphic design choice based on the fact that we all SHOULD recognize what a pickle is&#8230;.,\u201d offered one commenter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI have a dog that doesn\u2019t say dog on it. Does that mean I don\u2019t know it\u2019s a dog?\u201d asked another, likely while rolling their eyes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Another TikTok with hundreds of thousands of views goes deeper into the issue. Rachel Stonecraft (@hyperfocuspod) theorizes in a Stitch with Banwell\u2019s original video that the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/food-labeling-nutrition\/standards-identity-food\">FDA\u2019s Standards of Identity<\/a> (SOI) holds the answer.<\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-widget embedWidget embed-widget--medium\"><\/section>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cSOIs are specialized guidelines that certain foods have to meet, like what ingredients a food must contain, what it may contain, proportion of ingredients and even production methods. If it doesn\u2019t meet those standards, it cannot be labeled as that food,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s why nondairy ice cream can\u2019t legally be called ice cream.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-widget embedWidget embed-widget--medium\"><\/section>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI saw some comments saying that maybe that they didn\u2019t meet the standard of identity for pickles. That\u2019s not the case, I looked up all of the regulations regarding pickles. And it\u2019s not that they don\u2019t meet the regulations for pickles,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/t\/ZT8FvFeJp\/\">says<\/a> TikTok user Food <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> Babe in direct opposition to Stonecraft\u2019s theory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">While Stonecraft was right about the meaning of SOIs, she was incorrect about SOIs being the reason some pickle jars don\u2019t have the word on them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">When reached for comment on the reason the word isn\u2019t required on pickle labels, the FDA provided TODAY.com with its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/files\/food\/published\/Food-Labeling-Guide-%28PDF%29.pdf\">Food Labeling Guidelines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">To sell a retail product regulated by the FDA, a product label must contain these five components: a statement of identity, a statement of net content, nutrition facts, an ingredient statement with allergen labeling compliance and the name and address of manufacturer, packer or distributor. Everything from soda to salt has these on their labels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">There are so many different types of pickles: full sour pickles, sweet pickles, bread and butter pickles, gherkins, cornichons and, of course, dill pickles. Then, of course, you have all the different shapes pickles can come in, from slices to spears and more, which may be more pertinent info to provide a consumer than what we all know is a pickle in a jar. All of those descriptors, mind you, count as a statement of identity, thus meeting the FDA requirement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Additionally, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/media\/PicklesStandard.pdf\">USDA\u2019s Standards for Grades of Pickles<\/a>, to be considered a pickle, a product needs to be prepared entirely or predominantly from cucumbers, that \u201cclean, sound ingredients are used that may or may not have been previously subjected to fermentation and curing in a salt brine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The USDA also writes that pickles are to be prepared and preserved through natural or controlled fermentation or by direct addition of vinegar to an \u201cequilibrated pH of 4.6 or below.\u201d According to pickle website <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thesavvypickle.com\/what-pickle-brand-has-the-most-acidic-pickle\/\">The Savvy Pickle, which field tested seven well-known brands<\/a>, all brands sold in the store had a pH of 3.91 or below, meaning that they all classify as pickles, whether or not they have the word on them.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_do_the_pickle_brands_have_to_say_about_all_this\"><\/span><strong>What do the pickle brands have to say about all this?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">To find out what the <em>dill <\/em>is with the brands who don\u2019t put the word \u201cpickle\u201d on their jars, we went straight to the pickle pushers themselves. Olive spokesperson tells TODAY.com.\u00a0\u201cConsequently, we use the front label to focus on the variety \u2014 the cut and flavor \u2014 of the pickle inside the jar.\u00a0I went back and looked at some of our older labels, and this practice has largely been true for us at least since the 1950s. As you may be aware, it\u2019s pretty standard for other brands, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mt. Olive also notes that its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mtolivepickles.com\/pickle-products\/resealable-pouch-munchies-kosher-dill-chips\/\">Munchies Portable Pickles<\/a>, which come in resealable pouches, are not in translucent or clear packaging, therefore its pickles cannot be seen by a consumer from the outside.
