The documents suggest Nixon may have had intel on the extent of a possible coup.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The documents come shortly ahead of the 50<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the coup against\u00a0President Salvador Allende on Sept. 11, 1973.<\/p>\n<p>The document from Sept. 8, 1973 indicates Nixon was informed on a number of reports about the \u201cpossibility of an early military coup attempt,\u201d involving Chile\u2019s Navy, Air Force and Army, though the document noted there was not yet such evidence of a coordinated coup plan.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/readingroom\/docs\/THE%20PRESIDENTS%20DAILY%20BRIE%5B16311985%5D.pdf\">Sept. 8 document<\/a>\u00a0said former <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a>ist President Salvador Allende believed the armed forces would ask for his resignation and \u201craised the prospect of an \u2018armed confrontation\u2019 between his followers and the military.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the briefing, Nixon was told Allende believed his supporters lacked enough weapons to succeed in such an event and it was too late to distribute more since the armed forces would stop it. The document detailed Allende\u2019s belief that the situation was \u201cserious\u201d and required \u201csome tactical retreats.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is worried about the sustained opposition pressures against him and, especially, about the intentions of the military,\u201d the briefing wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/readingroom\/docs\/THE%20PRESIDENTS%20DAILY%20BRIE%5B16311984%5D.pdf\">a second document<\/a>\u00a0dated the day of the coup, Sept. 11, 1973, the briefing discussed \u201cplans by navy officers to trigger military action against the Allende government.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAlthough military officers are increasingly determined to restore political and economic order, they may still lack an effectively coordinated plan that would capitalize on the widespread civilian opposition,\u201d the briefing wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The military, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Augusto Pinochet, would go on later that day to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/history.state.gov\/milestones\/1969-1976\/allende\">launch a coup<\/a>\u00a0against the Allende government. Allende died during the events in the coup on Sept. 11, and his death is now widely regarded as a suicide. On Sept. 13, Pinochet was named the president of Chile.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Three years earlier, Nixon gave direct orders to CIA director Richard Helms to \u201csave Chile\u201d by initiating a military coup to block the inauguration of Allende, the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nsarchive.gwu.edu\/briefing-book\/chile\/2022-09-12\/coup-chile-what-did-nixon-know-and-when-did-he-know-it\">National Security Archive said<\/a> last year. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>This discovery fueled speculation over the Nixon administration\u2019s involvement with the coup, and prompted further calls from the Government of Chile to declassify further documents related to the coup.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlong with the thousands of documents previously declassified, the release of these PDBs today demonstrates our enduring commitment to the U.S.-Chile partnership and is consistent with our joint efforts to\u00a0promote democracy and human rights in our own countries and around the world,\u201d the U.S. State Department<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/u-s-government-declassifies-the-presidents-daily-briefs-related-to-chile-from-september-8-1973-and-september-11-1973\/#:~:text=Along%20with%20the%20thousands%20of,countries%20and%20around%20the%20world.\"> said in a statement. <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
