\n Eiichiro Oda, One Piece<\/em> creator and executive producer on Netflix\u2019s upcoming adaptation, says that he changed his mind about whether his long-running manga<\/a> could get a live-action adaption after both technology<\/a> advances and seeing Shaolin Soccer<\/em>. <\/p>\n

\n In a rare interview with The New York Times<\/em><\/a>, the Japanese artist\u00a0behind the best-selling manga in history discusses how Stephen Chow\u2019s 2001 Hong Kong sports comedy inspired the live-action take and how he ensured his upcoming series<\/a> \u2014\u00a0which follows a stream of live-action manga adaptation misses \u2014\u00a0would be satisfactory to fans. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWhen I first started, I didn\u2019t think there was any point in drawing a manga that could be remade in live-action,\u201d Oda said. \u201cBut when I saw the movie [Chow\u2019s] ,<\/em> it felt like a manga-esque world brought to life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n It was at that point, he says, that he changed his mind \u2014 with a little help from technological advances. \u201cI realized times had changed, and there was technology available that could make a live-action One Piece<\/em> happ<\/a>en. So I shifted to finding the right partner to bring the manga to life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n One Piece<\/em> follows Monkey D. Luffy, a teen whose body possesses the properties of rubber after he eats a Devil Fruit. With the help of the\u00a0Straw Hat Pirates,\u00a0he searches the world for a treasure known as the \u201cOne Piece,\u201d to become the next Pirate King. <\/p>\n

\n It debuted in the Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump <\/em>anthology magazine in 1997 before getting its long-running anime TV adaptation in 1999. The story has also been adapted into video game<\/a>s and for the big screen, including the most recent One Piece Film: Red<\/em>. But Netflix\u2019s live action interpretation is the first of its kind after attempts like Ghost in the Shell<\/em>, Cowboy Bebop <\/em>and Death Note<\/em> have been met with less than welcome reception. <\/p>\n

\n For Oda, the \u201chistory of failure\u201d raised questions for him, and as a result, he acted as a \u201cguard dog\u201d over the property as the streamer and its showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda brought it to screen. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cVarious manga had been made into live action, but there was a history of failure; no one in Japan could name a successful example. Would fans of \u201cOne Piece\u201d \u2014 and viewers who don\u2019t know the manga \u2014 accept it?\u201d he told the Times<\/em>. \u201cThankfully, Netflix agreed that they wouldn\u2019t go out with the show until I agreed it was satisfactory. I read the scripts, gave notes and acted as a guard dog to ensure the material was being adapted in the correct way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n In an earlier note to fans<\/a>, Oda expressed that he made \u201cno compromises\u201d on the show, which was seven years in the making. And while he\u2019s sure some fans will be vocal about changes made amid the show\u2019s efforts to present \u201cthings in a way that can only be done in live action,\u201d he calls the show\u2019s team \u201cpros\u201d and One Piece<\/em> \u201csuperfans.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cEven after the shoot was over, there were numerous scenes the production agreed to re-shoot because I felt they weren\u2019t good enough to put out into the world,\u201d he wrote. \u201cOn the other hand, there were lines that I thought didn\u2019t feel like Luffy on paper\u2026 but when I saw the filmed scenes, I went, \u2018It works when it\u2019s I\u00f1aki [Godoy] performing it as Luffy.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cThere were so many things that had to be done to keep things from looking too unnatural in live-action,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n

\n Reviews are not yet out on the Netflix series, but Oda\u2019s approach to One Piece<\/em>\u2018s live-action is by his accounts careful, particularly in terms of how it brings what fans love about the characters to screen. It\u2019s something he says is key to any successful live-action manga adaptation. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cA live-action adaptation of a manga doesn\u2019t simply re-enact the source material on a one-to-one basis: It involves really thinking about what fans love about the characters, the dynamics among them \u2014 and being faithful to those elements,\u201d he told the NYT<\/em>. \u201cA good live-action show doesn\u2019t have to change the story too much. The most important thing is whether the actors can reproduce the characters in a way that will satisfy the people who read the manga. I think we did it well, so I hope audiences will accept it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
