Explaining himself, he says simply: \u201cWe\u2019re Italians.\u201d He repeats the explanation again and again. Italians don\u2019t let innocents drown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The message isn\u2019t subtle and few Italians will miss the director\u2019s point, his drawing a sharp contrast between this war hero of Italy\u2019s past and the country\u2019s current far-right government with its fierce anti-migrant agenda.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Sandro Veronesi, who co-wrote the screenplay to <em>Comandante<\/em> with De Angelis, said the film started as a direct response to Italian government policies in 2019, when then-interior minister Matteo Salvini essentially declared war on the non-governmental organizations trying to save migrants drowning at sea, closing Italian ports to migrant rescue ships and threatening the rescuers with fines and criminal charges if they defied him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201c[It was] a disgrace, disregarding the most basic rules of the sea: that of coming to the aid of those in need \u2026 I didn\u2019t want to be part of it,\u201d says Veronesi, calling <em>Comandante<\/em> a story \u201cthat restores the honor we were losing amid unrepeatable political slogans and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> teeming with putrid things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Veronesi doesn\u2019t refer directly to him, but Salvini, currently Italy\u2019s infrastructure minister, was in the audience at the <em>Comandante <\/em>premiere Wednesday night, making the link between film and politics inevitable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    An even more direct link is made in two Venice competition films: Matteo Garrone\u2019s <em>Io Capitano<\/em>, which follows the journey of two Senegalese teenagers trying to cross the Mediterranean to Italy, and Agnieszka Holland\u2019s Polish feature <em>Green Border<\/em>. Holland\u2019s film dramatizes the plight of migrants from North Africa and the Middle East lured to the Belarusian-Polish border by propaganda promising easy passage into the European Union. Instead, they became pawns in a geopolitical <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> when the Polish government cracked down, leaving them stranded and starving in the swampy, treacherous forests between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cIt a forbidden zone, a zone of fear, and a zone of the dead,\u201d says Holland. \u201cThe situation is so dangerous for the future of Europe because if we accept this violence as a response to the political problems, if we forget the rights of the human beings just because they are \u2018illegal\u2019 or Black or whatever, the next step [will be] to kill them. I did three films about the Holocaust [<em>Europa Europa<\/em>, <em>In Darkness<\/em>, <em>Mr. Jones<\/em>], and I know how easy it is to go past the point of no return, where the violence only multiplies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Taken together, the films suggest a shift in focus for European filmmakers addressing the migrant crisis, from looking at the plight of migrants inside Europe \u2014 see Ken Loach\u2019s <em>The Old Oak<\/em> or the Dardenne Brothers\u2019 <em>Tori &amp; Lokita<\/em> \u2014 to a spotlight on the those caught outside, desperately trying to get in. As <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of the migrant crisis has dropped out of the headlines, these new films are a reminder of the thousands still suffering and dying on the borders of fortress Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI don\u2019t have any solutions to the problems of global migration, but I think we have to face the problem and discuss it, to look for the real solutions,\u201d says Holland, \u201cand not take the solution of the ostrich sticking his head in the sand, who thinks by keeping the boats or the people from coming to our shores, we have resolved the problem.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
