\n Lily Gladstone got very candid about how she feels about Yellowstone<\/em>. <\/p>\n

\n In an interview with Vulture <\/em>conducted ahead of the SAG-AFTRA strike, the Killers of the Flower Moon <\/em>star<\/a> opened up about how being a working actor means not always having the freedom to pick and choose material \u2014 especially if it\u2019s slim pickings. <\/p>\n

\n Over the course of her career, the actress has worked on projects by Native and non-Native writers. One project by a non-Native artist that she has a strong opinion on is Taylor Sheridan\u2019s Yellowstone<\/em>, Paramount\u2019s series<\/a> which portrays Native Americans, calling it \u201cdelusional\u201d and \u201cdeplorable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cNo offense to the Native talent in that,\u201d she added. \u201cI auditioned several times. That\u2019s what we had.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The Reservation Dogs <\/em>actress also explained in the profile that she thinks about which stories of Indigenous people get told and who gets to tell them, noting it can be a \u201cdouble-edged sword.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n \u201cYou want to have more Natives writing Native stories,\u201d she said. \u201cYou also want the masters to pay attention to what\u2019s going on. American history is not history without Native history.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n Killers of the Flower Moon<\/em>, based on Eric Roth\u2019s book of the same name, takes place in the 1920s and centers on a series of murders in Oklahoma\u2019s Osage Native American tribe after oil is found on their land. The Martin Scorsese film also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow and Tantoo Cardinal.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt\u2019s not a white-savior story,\u201d Gladstone said of the film they ended up making that focuses on the tribe instead of the FBI swooping in to investigate. \u201cIt\u2019s the Osage saying, \u2018Do something. Here\u2019s money. Come help us.’\u201d <\/p>\n

\n She shared that the fact Scorsese attended a dinner with members of the Indigenous community in Gray Horse, Oklahoma, where some of the murders took place, showed that he wanted to hear from the Osage people, as well as from Gladstone herself. \u201cIt was clear that I wasn\u2019t just going to be given space to collaborate,\u201d she explained. \u201cI was expected to bring a lot to the table.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n Elsewhere in the piece, the Oscar-nominated director discussed choosing the actress to play the part of Mollie Burkhart, the female lead of the film, an Osage woman living in the area at the time. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cShe had a very sharp sense of her own presence before the camera and an extremely unusual trust in simplicity,\u201d Scorsese said. \u201cThat\u2019s a rare thing. You can\u2019t take your eyes off her.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n Killers of the Flower Moon <\/em>hits theaters Oct. 20. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
