A special election for the Pennsylvania state House will determine partisan balance of the state\u2019s lower chamber. And elections for the Virginia <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Assembly will have enormous implications for Gov. Glenn Youngkin\u2019s (R) political future.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>These are just a few of the colorful elections taking place soon that could offer glimpses into voters\u2019 attitudes ahead of the 2024 election. While several of the races are taking place during the standard November election timeline, a few are taking place this coming Tuesday, a day after Labor Day, which would impact voter turnout in those races.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at five under-the-radar races to watch for this fall:<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sept_5\"><\/span><strong>Sept. 5<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rhode_Island_special_Democratic_House_primary\"><\/span><strong>Rhode Island special Democratic House primary<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1400\" height=\"787\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/matossabina_11092022ap.jpg?w=900\" alt=\"Lt. Gov. David Cicilline\u2019s (D-R.I.) term after Cicilline resigned earlier this year to head the Rhode Island Foundation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Among those running include Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos, former state legislator Aaron Regunberg, and Gabe Amo, who most recently served as a special assistant to President Biden and deputy director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those three are being backed by different cohorts within the Democratic Party. Bold PAC, the campaign arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus; the centrist New Democrat Coalition Action Fund; and Emily\u2019s List are backing Matos. Meanwhile, Regunberg has received endorsements from progressives like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), in addition to the Congressional Progressive Caucus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The Congressional Black Caucus PAC and former White House chief of staff Ron Klain are among some of Amo\u2019s backers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Hill Elections 2024 coverage<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Recent polling has been scarce, but internal polling publicized by Amo\u2019s campaign and taken in mid-August found the former Biden White House senior aide close to 10 points behind Regunberg,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2023\/08\/24\/metro\/in-1st-congressional-district-race-amo-internal-poll-puts-him-in-second-place\/?event=event12\">according to The Boston Globe<\/a>. Roughly 28 percent of respondents chose Regunberg, then Amo in second at 19 percent and Matos and state Sen. Chris Stewart (R-Utah) in the state\u2019s 2nd Congressional District. Stewart announced in late May that he was resigning from his seat, citing his wife\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Former state legislator and Senate challenger Becky Edwards; entrepreneur and former Utah GOP chair Bruce Hough; and Stewart\u2019s former chief legal counsel, Celeste Maloy, are all running to serve the remainder of Stewart\u2019s term. Stewart and former Rep. Bob Bishop (R-Utah) have both endorsed Maloy, and she was voted in June as the GOP pick at the Republican convention.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans who do not win the GOP convention can still run if they meet a signature threshold.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Top_Stories_from_The_Hill\"><\/span>Top Stories from The Hill<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">Maloy\u2019s voter status generated some controversy after winning the convention because, when she launched her run, she wasn\u2019t a registered GOP voter. She lived in Virginia to work for Stewart and did not vote in either of the last two election cycles,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/news\/politics\/2023\/07\/31\/celeste-maloy-remain-gops-special\/\">according to The Salt Lake Tribune<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want my absentee ballot from out of state to get flagged as a fraudulent vote. I didn\u2019t want my boss to be answering any questions about my vote,\u201d Maloy\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/kslnewsradio.com\/2014733\/celeste-maloy-explains-why-she-wasnt-a-registered-republican-the-last-two-years-utah-gop-confirms-she-is-eligible-to-be-the-nominee\/\">told KSL NewsRadio in June<\/a>, discussing the lapse in her voting record.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An effort to have her taken off the primary ballot was ultimately tossed out by a judge.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2023\/8\/27\/23846333\/utah-2nd-congressional-district-election-edwards-maloy-hough-poll\">poll released by Deseret News and Hinckley Institute of Politics in late August<\/a>\u00a0found Edwards in the lead at 32 percent among Republicans in the district, followed by Hough at 11 percent and Maloy at 9 percent. But it also found that a whopping 47 percent were unsure who they\u2019re voting for.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>State Sen. Kathleen Riebe (D) was t<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed by Democratic delegates in the state as their pick to replace Stewart. (AP Photo\/Matt Rourke)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Democrats are bracing for another special election in the Pennsylvania state House, which will determine the partisan tilt of the lower chamber.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The matchup for the 21st House District in the state is between Erin Connolly Autenreith, a realtor who\u2019s also chair of the Shaler Republican Committee, and Democrat Lindsay Powell, the director of workforce strategies at InnovatePGH. Former state Rep. Sara Innamorato (D) vacated her seat to run for Allegheny County executive.<\/p>\n<p>With Innamorato\u2019s decision to resign, it brings back the partisan tilt in the state House to 101-101, meaning whoever wins the state House special election later in September will determine where it remains within Democratic control or flips red.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this spring,\u00a0Democrats won a special election in the Pennsylvania state House\u00a0for the 163rd House District following the resignation of state Rep. Michael Zabel (D). (Administrative office of Pennsylvania Courts via AP)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A state Supreme Court race this November could put Republicans one step closer toward clinching a majority on the high court in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania appellate court judge Daniel McCaffery (D) and Montgomery County judge Carolyn Carluccio (R) both won their respective primaries in May to fill a vacant seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court after the late Chief Supreme Court Justice Max Baer (D) died last fall. Baer\u2019s death brought the high court back to a 4-2 split, with Democrats in the majority.<\/p>\n<p>Though Democrats will still retain a majority on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court regardless of who wins the November election, a win for Carluccio will bring Republicans closer to flipping the partisan control of the court.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apple.news\/T7zM9N_S2SDKHQ2PypEf8AQ?subscribe=1\">Sign up for the latest from The Hill here<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>Issues of abortion and democracy have created renewed importance over the role of state Supreme Court races.
