{"id":589798,"date":"2023-09-04T12:30:16","date_gmt":"2023-09-04T09:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/venice-hidden-gem-poking-fun-at-shifting-class-fault-lines-in-coup\/"},"modified":"2023-09-04T12:30:16","modified_gmt":"2023-09-04T09:30:16","slug":"venice-hidden-gem-poking-fun-at-shifting-class-fault-lines-in-coup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/venice-hidden-gem-poking-fun-at-shifting-class-fault-lines-in-coup\/","title":{"rendered":"#Venice Hidden Gem: Poking Fun at Shifting Class Fault Lines in \u2018Coup!\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The 1 percent may be enjoying some serious #lifegoals at the minute, but they\u2019ve been having something of a tough time on screen. <em>Parasite<\/em>, <em>Triangle of Sadness<\/em> and<em> The Menu<\/em> are just a few recent films that have shifted the power dynamics away from the super wealthy and into the hands of those grubby lower classes, with sometimes deadly results.\u00a0<em>Coup! <\/em>\u2014\u00a0from Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman, who both wrote and directed, and closing the Venice Days sidebar \u2014\u00a0is set to join this growing list.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Set during the 1918 Spanish Flu, the darkly comic thriller stars Billy Magnussen as Jay, a progressive, velvet-slippered U.S. journalist sheltering from the chaos with his family \u2014\u00a0and their servants \u2014\u00a0on a swanky island estate (all the while penning angry articles that suggest he\u2019s in the thick of it in New York). But when Peter Sarsgaard\u2019s mysterious grifter Floyd shows up as their cook, the devious newcomer spies the chance to upend the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> strata and spark a rebellion to seize his mansion (and more).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Unsurprisingly, early inspiration was drawn from the recent pandemic, when Stark and Schuman \u2014\u00a0friends since the age of 6 \u2014\u00a0found themselves living together in Long Island.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cIt was a time where New Yorkers with means were just fleeing, whether it was to The Hamptons or upstate New York or to farms in Pennsylvania,\u201d says Stark. Magnussen\u2019s character was partially shaped by former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, who, Stark says, was \u201cbroadcasting from his basement in the Hamptons and implying he was in New York\u00a0\u2014\u00a0although there was enough ambiguity that he didn\u2019t get completely fried for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Although the flu serves as the backdrop, Schuman says it was deployed merely as the \u201ccanvas that gets our characters marooned on a deserted island.\u201d The setting allowed them to poke around and have fun with the idea of \u201cwhat h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens to this upstairs downstairs relationship when the social order stops functioning\u00a0\u2014\u00a0do the expectations of the employer and employee still apply to this situation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    As Schuman notes, \u201cthese broad scale emergencies have a way of betraying the fault lines of the class system, which was deeply appealing to us to write about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    This was one of the reasons why the two decided to turn the clock back 100 years, creating a layer of distance so that\u00a0<em>Coup!<\/em>, despite it\u2019s contemporary roots, wasn\u2019t a COVID film. And the progressive era of that time was a good mirror to the conflicts of the present day. \u201cEspecially in that not that much has changed,\u201d says Schuman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Sarsgaard had been eyed from the start as the chef-hatted rebel Floyd, the sense of calculated energy in the actor\u2019s eyes making him perfect for the role. \u201cYou always feel like his gears are turning \u2014\u00a0and he does dark very well, but he\u2019s not given enough opportunities to do comedy,\u201d says Stark. For Magnussen as Sarsgaard\u2019s pampered target Jay, it was more of a reversal of his usual characters. \u201cHe plays the tormentor in so many other roles that we thought it would be really interesting to put him in the part of the tormented.\u201d Midway through\u00a0<em>Coup!<\/em>, there\u2019s a small cameo from frequent cameo-maker Fisher Stevens, who pops up as the real-life muckraker Upton Sinclair. Coincidentally, Stevens happened to be a huge fan of the writer and political activist. He signed up.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    While the filmmakers admits that they did take inspiration from <em>Parasite<\/em> (they hadn\u2019t seen <em>Triangle of Sadness<\/em> when writing the script), they claim the aim wasn\u2019t solely to do a takedown of society\u2019s upper echelons. By putting Jay and Floyd together in the same house, they hoped to create an immediate conflict between figures representing two sides of a sharply polarized country, a conflict Schuman describes as having a \u201cdarkly esoteric edge\u201d to it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cWe weren\u2019t thinking so much about it being an \u2018eat the rich\u2019 film as much as just doing something original and something that appealed to us, that spoke to our class struggle and social divide,\u201d says Stark. \u201cBut it\u2019s really cool to see this kind of subgenre take shape.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
