Now is the time to act.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The top prosecutors\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scag.gov\/media\/pvehppkm\/54-state-ags-urge-study-of-ai-and-harmful-impacts-on-children.pdf\">sent a letter<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday to Congressional leadership, asking lawmakers to \u201cestablish an expert commission to study the means and methods of AI that can be used to exploit children specifically.\u201d The letter notes that AI can be used to create child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and deepfakes that can exploit abused children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Attorneys General of our respective States and territories, we have a deep and grave concern for the safety of the children within our respective jurisdictions,\u201d the prosecutors wrote. \u201cWe also have a responsibility to hold accountable those who seek to harm children in our States and territories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd while internet crimes against children are already being actively prosecuted, we are concerned that AI is creating a new frontier for abuse that makes such prosecution more difficult,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p>They called on Congress to \u201cact to deter and address child exploitation, such as by expanding existing restrictions on CSAM to explicitly cover AI-generated CSAM.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson (R) spearheaded the effort alongside attorneys general from Mississippi, North Carolina and Oregon to collect signatures from all 50 states and four territories and said that keeping children safe from exploitation is his \u201ctop priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the chief prosecutor of the state, but even more importantly, I\u2019m a dad. Doing all I can to ensure children are safe and protected from exploitation is my top priority,\u201d Wilson said in a statement.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAI brings the potential for a lot of good, but also kicks open the door for a lot wrongdoing.
