{"id":590007,"date":"2023-09-06T02:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-05T23:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/texas-gop-critics-of-paxton-wave-off-far-right-primary-threats-amid-impeachment-battle\/"},"modified":"2023-09-06T02:30:00","modified_gmt":"2023-09-05T23:30:00","slug":"texas-gop-critics-of-paxton-wave-off-far-right-primary-threats-amid-impeachment-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/texas-gop-critics-of-paxton-wave-off-far-right-primary-threats-amid-impeachment-battle\/","title":{"rendered":"#Texas GOP critics of Paxton wave off far-right primary threats amid impeachment battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/AP23248701077614-e1693947658909.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 Republican state senators Tuesday waved off a far-right pressure campaign to cancel the impeachment trial of embattled Texas Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Ken Paxton \u2014 and with it, the looming threat of retribution.<\/p>\n<p>Paxton\u2019s trial\u00a0represents a civil war between members of the ruling GOP coalition \u2014 a fracture that <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to be widening.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The failure of the Paxton faction to persuade the state Senate to throw out the trial represented a danger\u00a0sign for his im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te prospects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But that failure also represented something much larger: a significant setback for the state\u2019s far right, which has long relied on the threat of a right-flank challenger to cow the state\u2019s moderate Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>In late August, The Texas Tribune broke the story that Paxton\u2019s allies in the Christian nationalist movement were pressuring GOP senators to vote to throw the trial out \u2014 or face familiar consequences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone that votes against Ken Paxton in this impeachment is risking their entire political career, and we will make sure that is the case,\u201d right-wing activist Jonathan Stickland, who runs the pro-Paxton Defend Texas Liberty PAC, told Steve Bannon in a mid-August interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stickland\u00a0singled out six\u00a0Republican\u00a0senators: Kelly Hancock (North Richland Hills), Mayes Middleton (Galveston), Bryan Hughes (Mineola), Charles Schwertner (Georgetown), Charles Perry (Lubbock) and Drew Springer (Muenster).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re gonna make all these six famous in the days ahead,\u201d Bannon replied, as Stickland threatened to sponsor primary campaigns against any Republicans who voted against Paxton.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        Texas Senate rejects motion to dismiss Paxton impeachment charges<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>But only Hancock, from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, voted to throw out the charges entirely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two others \u2014\u00a0Perry\u00a0of the Panhandle city of Lubbock, and\u00a0Schwertner,\u00a0from a conservative\u00a0suburb of liberal Austin \u2014 voted for less-sweeping measures that nonetheless would have effectively ended the trial.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All six of the targeted senators represented small cities or exurbs \u2014 both of which in Texas usually signify Republican strongholds.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>By defying Paxton\u2019s supporters, the three dissidents Middleton, Springer and Hughes signaled their willingness to run the risk of the most fearsome threat that the Texas right can offer: a contested primary among the famously conservative Republican primary electorate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For decades, that threat has been a key cudgel wielded against the moderate, libertarian-leaning Republicans by the ascendant Christian right \u2014 two quasi-parties within the Republican coalition that has ruled Texas as a one-party state since the late \u201890s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While that coalition party won the Republicans unquestioned statewide rule under former Govs. George W. Bush (R) and Rick Perry (R), the alliance has always been uneasy, and cracks began to show with the rise of the Tea Party movement in the late 2000s, as the populist right sought ever more control and ideological purity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The populist push for dominance gave post-Bush Texas politics a distinctive usage of a common political word.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Texas, \u201cto primary\u201d has the highly specialized meaning of \u201cto support a right-wing challenger to a moderate Republican in the hopes of unseating them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This threat was a principal weapon employed during the right wing\u2019s ascendance\u00a0under current\u00a0Gov. Greg Abbott (R).\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In that campaign, the powerful right-wing Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) led a purge of the Senate \u2014 the body now trying Paxton \u2014 which left that body largely controlled by the far right. But a similar far-right takeover of the House failed \u2014 laying the foundation for this week\u2019s impeachment trial.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        Texas officials, Paxton attorneys trade scathing opening statements in impeachment trial<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>In 2017, an insurgent campaign tried to force the resignation of moderate, Prius-driving GOP House Speaker Joe Straus (San Antonio), a campaign defeated by Democrats and moderate Republicans. To this date, the chamber remains controlled by a moderate Republican Speaker, real estate developer Rep. Dade Phelan (Beaumont).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But while it ultimately failed, the long campaign to unseat Straus served as a knife-sharpening appetizer for the\u00a0fight\u00a0over Paxton \u2014 complete with the weaponized primary. Straus ultimately resigned after that term, citing exhaustion as a primary reason.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Texas fracking billionaire Farris Wilks, his brother Dan Wilks and fellow Christian nationalist ally Tim Dunn have also been Paxton\u2019s biggest\u00a0benefactors. The three have given nearly $15 million to Defend Texas Liberty, the pro-Paxton PAC, since it was founded in 2020 \u2014 $3.5 million of it since Paxton\u2019s impeachment in June, as the Tribune reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That PAC has also given more than $3 million to impeachment judge\u00a0Patrick\u00a0since the charges were announced in late June.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the mere fact of Paxton\u2019s impeachment \u2014 alongside Tuesday\u2019s failure by the far right to get those charges thrown out \u2014 suggests that the threat of the right-wing primary may no longer work to cow the business conservatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>This was not for lack of trying.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA vote to impeach Ken Paxton is a decision to have a primary. Can\u2019t wait to see who sides with Democrats,\u201d Stickland, the far-right activist at Defend Texas Liberty, warned in May, as the Paxton impeachment vote loomed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Speaker Phelan \u2014 another leading public enemy of the right who had spurred Stickland\u2019s reaction with the prior unveiling of sweeping charges against the attorney general \u2014 won that round.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The attorney general was impeached by Texas House Republicans 121-23 \u2014 a factor of nearly 6-to-1.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And as Tuesday\u2019s vote shows, Paxton may yet escape with his job \u2014 but GOP members are no longer willing to\u00a0toe\u00a0the Christian right line just because a primary is threatened.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
