{"id":590152,"date":"2023-09-07T05:31:17","date_gmt":"2023-09-07T02:31:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/mexicos-next-president-will-be-a-woman\/"},"modified":"2023-09-07T05:31:17","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T02:31:17","slug":"mexicos-next-president-will-be-a-woman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/mexicos-next-president-will-be-a-woman\/","title":{"rendered":"#Mexico\u2019s next president will be a woman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/Sheinbaum_Galvez_ap.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Mexico\u2019s ruling party on Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointed former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum as its presidential candidate for 2024, all but guaranteeing that the country\u2019s next leader will be the first woman to hold the office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sheinbaum is running against Sen. X\u00f3chitl G\u00e1lvez, whose surprise entry into the opposition primaries galvanized and united a motley group of civil society organizations and political parties that were once bitter rivals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>G\u00e1lvez on Sunday was formally appointed as the opposition\u2019s unity candidate in a massive rally at Mexico City\u2019s \u201cangel of independence,\u201d a central monument that\u2019s often served as an alternate focal point to the officialist symbolism of the city\u2019s main square and National Palace.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ruling party, Morena, was built around the figure of President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador and shook the Mexican political system with a landslide takeover of the executive and legislative branches in 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>L\u00f3pez Obrador, who is constitutionally barred from seeking reelection, is also legally constrained from influencing the electoral process, but he has made his presence felt in both the Morena and opposition primaries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Morena\u2019s primary was built around a \u201cpublic consult\u201d \u2013 a poll \u2013 with results announced late Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The party\u2019s two major contenders were Sheinbaum and former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, though Sheinbaum was <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly perceived as L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s favorite, with Ebrard denouncing what he called an uneven playing field throughout the process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Though L\u00f3pez Obrador was careful not to explicitly weigh in on the Morena primary, which also included a few minor candidates, two of his brothers were key players, one endorsing Sheinbaum and the other Ebrard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>L\u00f3pez Obrador has often relied on Morena\u2019s public polling structure to determine high-level decisions, such as the construction of an airport or the closure of a U.S.-owned beer plant. In every case, the polls have yielded the result L\u00f3pez Obrador is known to support.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ebrard\u2019s supporters accused Sheinbaum of using <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> programs to illicitly bolster her campaign, as well as of under-reporting exorbitant campaign spending.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ebrard on Wednesday called for a re-do of Morena\u2019s presidential polls before the result was announced, and he accused the party of using police to prevent his supporters from personally observing the ballot count.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>On Wednesday, G\u00e1lvez reacted to the split in Morena by cheering on Ebrard from the Senate, telling him to \u201chold on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not convenient for me: I\u2019m going to get my own. I\u2019m going to go to the street, to wherever I need to get. I\u2019m not thinking about who breaks [off], who is divided,\u201d said G\u00e1lvez, according to local papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just saw that Marcelo said the process had to be re-done and that\u2019s why I cheered him on.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Ebrard said late Wednesday he would announce his future plans on Monday; third-party and independent bids are widely seen as long shots.<\/p>\n<p>Though Ebrard lambasted party leaders, he has been careful not to single out the president as putting his thumb on the scale.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>L\u00f3pez Obrador was, however, instrumental in the opposition\u2019s internal process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In 2022, he accused G\u00e1lvez, a senator, of giving a speech in opposition to government cash transfers to alleviate poverty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>G\u00e1lvez, at the time seen as a leading contender to run for mayor of Mexico City, called out the president, who she said distorted her speech, in which she said she supported the cash transfers but argued they were ineffective without educational programs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In June, G\u00e1lvez showed up at the doors of the National Palace, the seat of government where L\u00f3pez Obrador lives and works, and demanded a right of reply during the president\u2019s daily hours-long broadcast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The doors to the National Palace were shut in her face, G\u00e1lvez made a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of viral videos about the issue and her campaign took off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For weeks, L\u00f3pez Obrador harangued G\u00e1lvez at his daily briefings, at one point even violating a court-imposed gag order.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>G\u00e1lvez capitalized on the presidential spotlight, jumping into the previously lackluster opposition presidential primary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The opposition primary field quickly dwindled after G\u00e1lvez entered the race, until only she and Sen. Beatriz Paredes \u2013 a seasoned political operator \u2013 were left days ahead of a final poll.<\/p>\n<p>Amid public polling showing a clear advantage for G\u00e1lvez and the potential for Morena activists to attempt to disrupt the final opposition poll, Paredes declined in favor of G\u00e1lvez.<\/p>\n<p>The opposition coalition was formed as a last-ditch effort by older parties to compete with Morena\u2019s powerful political operation, based on L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s popularity and his government\u2019s penchant for on-the-fly electoral reforms.<\/p>\n<p>Though the courts limited how far L\u00f3pez Obrador was able to take his reforms, G\u00e1lvez and the opposition still face an uphill battle against Morena\u2019s political machinery.<\/p>\n<p>The three parties in the opposition alliance had at one point set their goals for 2024 at keeping Morena from running the table to win a constitutional majority, but now face the challenge of mounting a competitive run toward the June 2 elections.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
