That is not the case under most battlefield exposure scenarios,\u201d according to a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/content\/dam\/rand\/pubs\/papers\/2009\/P8066.pdf\">RAND Corporation report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The effectiveness of depleted uranium rounds lies in their ability to pierce through tank armor as their sharpness increases during penetration. It can also be used  to reinforce tank armor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so dense, and it\u2019s got so much momentum that it just keeps going through the armor \u2014 and it heats it up so much that it catches on fire,\u201d RAND\u2019s nuclear expert and policy researcher Edward Geist said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Effects_of_depleted_Uranium\"><\/span>Effects of depleted Uranium?\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/topics\/spent-fuel-management\/depleted-uranium\">International Atomic Energy Agency<\/a> (IAEA), the United Nations\u2019 nuclear watchdog, stated that the depleted uranium is less radioactive than natural uranium, it still calls for caution when dealing with it. The agency said that it has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/sites\/default\/files\/iaearole.pdf\">\u201cchemical and radioactive toxicity.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fear is that if depleted uranium shells land on the ground, they may contaminate the soil,\u201d King\u2019s College London\u2019s post-doctoral researcher at the War Studies Department Dr. Marina Miron told the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-65051330\">BBC<\/a>. \u201cThat is why the US and its NATO allies sparked controversy when they used them in Kosovo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>United Nation\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/disarmament.unoda.org\/convarms\/depleted-uranium\/\">Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation<\/a> concluded that \u201cno clinically significant pathology related to radiation exposure to depleted uranium was found.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>This conclusion is slightly different from the 2019 study published in the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignpolicyjournal.com\/2019\/09\/21\/new-study-documents-depleted-uranium-impacts-on-children-in-iraq\/\">Foreign Policy Journal <\/a>that alluded to an association between depleted Uranium used by the U.S. during Iraq War and the Iraqi children having birth defects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Are_these_weapons_legal\"><\/span>Are these weapons legal?\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Yes, since they are not considered a nuclear weapon. Additionally, no specific treaty prohibits their implementation on the battlefield.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although, a group called The International Coalition to Ban Uranium Weapons has said that the weapons use could trigger health risks if civilians get exposed to its dust.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Russias_response\"><\/span>Russia\u2019s response:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Russia has strongly criticized the weapons transfer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe US Administration\u2019s decision to send depleted uranium rounds to [Ukraine] is a clear sign of inhumanity,\u201d the Russian Embassy in Washington said in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/9\/7\/what-are-depleted-uranium-munitions-and-why-is-us-sending-them-to-ukraine\">statement<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the transfer \u201cvery bad <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Peskov <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ukraine-russia-blinken-depleted-uranium-566352a33ea9035ae706345eaa4cfa95\">claimed<\/a> that the U.S.\u2019s of those weapons in former Yugoslavia has led to a raise in cancers and other illnesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Washingtons_view\"><\/span>Washington\u2019s view<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications at the National Security Council, said that \u201cdepleted uranium rounds will help them [Ukraine] be more effective on the battlefield.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat really is h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening is that Russia simply doesn\u2019t want to see Ukraine with tanks and more effective tank rounds that could be lethal against Russian tanks,\u201d a U.S. official told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/09\/06\/us-depleted-uranium-rounds-ukraine-decision-00114208\">Politico<\/a>. \u201cIf Russia has an issue with that, they can withdraw their tanks from Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
