{"id":590723,"date":"2023-09-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-10T21:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/hard-line-house-republicans-itching-for-shutdown-impeachment-fights\/"},"modified":"2023-09-11T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-09-10T21:00:00","slug":"hard-line-house-republicans-itching-for-shutdown-impeachment-fights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/hard-line-house-republicans-itching-for-shutdown-impeachment-fights\/","title":{"rendered":"#Hard-line House Republicans itching for shutdown, impeachment fights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/roychip_071323gn03_w.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Hard-line Republicans in the House are itching for fights over opening an impeachment inquiry into President Biden and\u00a0extracting\u00a0deep spending cuts even at the risk of a government shutdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their eagerness to fight isn\u2019t just with Biden and Democrats, but also with Republicans in their conference worried about the political risks of an impeachment fight and a shutdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Those dynamics pose\u00a0yet another challenge\u00a0for Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), whose job is to unify his conference.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m tired of all these Republicans hiding behind, \u2018Oh, but they\u2019ll say it\u2019s a shutdown. And they\u2019ll say that you\u2019re defunding law enforcement with [the Department of Homeland Security].\u2019 That is all bullshit,\u201d said Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), a member of the House Freedom Caucus.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is we\u2019re using the power that we were given to force change because you don\u2019t pay people not to do their job.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Allies of McCarthy are among those putting the pressure on him.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who has repeatedly offered support for McCarthy,\u00a0said she will not vote to fund the government unless the House opens an impeachment inquiry into Biden.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), decidedly not a McCarthy ally,\u00a0suggested he could force a vote on ousting the Speaker if he does not push forward on investigations of Biden and other officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201c[I]f Speaker McCarthy stands in our way, he may not have the job long,\u201d Gaetz wrote on X, formerly known as <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More moderate members of the House say there is not enough evidence to move forward on an impeachment inquiry and are pushing leadership to reach a compromise with Democrats to keep the government open.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) said the GOP needs \u201cmore concrete evidence\u201d to open an impeachment inquiry. And last week, the executive counsel of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus sent <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/problemsolverscaucus.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/problem-solvers-caucus-executive-council-sends-letter-house-and-senate\">Congressional leaders a\u00a0letter<\/a>\u00a0urging them \u201cto put differences aside and sit down together in the spirit of bipartisanship every single day until a solution is reached\u201d on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ropriations bills.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Lawmakers have precious little time to reach a funding deal. When the House returns Tuesday, there will be only 11 legislative days left before the end-of-month deadline.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most agree a continuing resolution or \u201cCR\u201d will be needed to keep the government open\u00a0and\u00a0buy\u00a0more\u00a0time to negotiate annual funding measures.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But even that will be tough because the\u00a0House Freedom Caucus\u00a0last month said it would not support a short-term measure to fund the government unless it addresses the situation at the border, the \u201cweaponization\u201d of the Department of Justice and \u201cwoke policies in the Pentagon.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Separately, the Republican Study Committee, a group a vast majority of 175 House Republicans belong to, said it wanted to ensure a stopgap measure was filled with \u201chigh priority conservative policies\u201d and funded the government at levels in line with\u00a0the Limit, Save, Grow Act \u2014 a spending cuts and policy reforms bill that Republicans passed as a starting point for debt ceiling increase negotiations with Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>Some hard-liners say policy concessions won\u2019t be enough.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-Mont.) called the policy asks \u201ca distraction and a decoy,\u201d explaining that he did sign on to the Freedom Caucus position even though he is a member of the group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI told everyone at that time, do you think that these are truly \u2014 these policies are truly going to be implemented? And no one said that they thought that they were. And I was like, then let\u2019s be honest with the American people,\u201d Rosendale said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the funding mess is the White House\u2019s $40 billion supplemental request, which is already causing a stir on Capitol Hill.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The White House request unveiled last month includes $24 billion for Ukraine \u2014 sparking another controversy. Senate leaders from both parties want to pass the full supplemental, which also includes disaster funding. But many House Republicans in the right flank are vehemently opposed to any more funding for Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Some conservatives say they aren\u2019t worried about a shutdown, either, if it stops the government from continuing on its current spending trajectory. Yet history suggests if a shutdown is blamed on the GOP, it will not be good politics \u2014 particularly for vulnerable Republican moderates in swing districts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democrats are already working to pin the blame on Republicans if the government shuts down.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Leader McCarthy knows that if a shutdown happens, it\u2019ll be caused by House Republicans,\u201d Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said last week. \u201cIt\u2019ll be bad for the country, but it\u2019ll also be very bad for them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>McCarthy has argued against bringing Washington to a screeching halt by saying it would in turn hurt GOP-led investigations into Biden that are fueling calls for an impeachment inquiry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we shut down, all the government shuts it down, investigation and everything else. It hurts the American public,\u201d McCarthy said on Fox\u2019s \u201cSunday Morning Futures\u201d in August.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But that line of reasoning is not flying with hard-line conservatives like Rosendale.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will not be intimidated into falling for this false argument that we can\u2019t continue to pursue impeachment inquiries or issue subpoenas,\u201d Rosendale said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The House this week will resume consideration of individual appropriations bills, with a measure\u00a0to fund\u00a0the Department of Defense on deck. More than 330 amendments to the legislation have been submitted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some hard-liners, however, are signaling they will withhold support from any funding bills unless they see the total spending for all 12 appropriations bills \u2014 a figure they have been requesting for months.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It all points to a tempestuous September, increased worries about a shutdown and another difficult stretch for McCarthy as conservatives prime themselves for battle.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeptember is National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month.
