\n \u201cThe Nun II\u201d topped the box office charts, earning a scary good $32.6 million this weekend from 3,728 locations. That was more than enough to topple Sony\u2019s \u201cThe Equalizer 3,\u201d which features Washington as a mysterious avenging angel, from the first place perch it held last weekend. \u201cThe Equalizer 3\u201d racked up over $12.1 million in its second weekend to push its domestic gross to $61.9 million. Globally, the action sequel crossed $100 million at worldwide box office, bringing its haul to $107.7 million.<\/p>\n

\n Though impressive, \u201cThe Nun II,\u201d which is the ninth chapter in Warner Bros.\u2019 ongoing \u201cConjuring\u201d series<\/a>, couldn\u2019t match the high-water mark set by its 2018 predecessor \u201cThe Nun,\u201d which opened with $53.8 million.\u00a0The film sees Taissa Farmiga and Bonnie Aarons return as Sister Irene and the titular Nun, respectively, with newcomers to the franchise, Jonas Bloquet, Storm Reid and Anna Popplewell, rounding out the ensemble of frequently habit-wearing characters. Michael Chaves, who directed \u201cThe Curse of La Llorona\u201d and \u201cThe Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,\u201d slid behind the camera for this installment. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cMy Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,\u201d the weekend\u2019s other new wide release, opened in third place with $10 million. The film was written and directed by Nia Vardalos, who also stars alongside John Corbett. Focus Features is distributing the film in the North America, while Universal Pictures International has foreign territories. The third chapter in the comedy series follows the eccentric Portokalos family as they travel<\/a> to Greece for a family reunion. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cJawan,\u201d an Indian\u00a0Hindi-language action-thriller, took fourth place with $6.2 million. The film features Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan playing a dual role of a father and son. It was directed by Atlee.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cBarbie,\u201d the Warner Bros. comedy that dominated the summer box office, rounded out the top five, grossing $5.9 million. That brings its domestic total to a flashy pink $620.5 million. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
