\n Jeopardy!<\/em> has put into place the final piece of its ever-evolving Season 40 puzzle. <\/p>\n

Sony Pictures Television on Monday finally made it official, confirming that, yes, Ken Jennings will be standing behind the game<\/a> show\u2019s iconic lectern when the new, writers\u2019 strike-altered season kicks off tonight. Jennings had been facing pressure to follow co-host\u00a0Mayim Bialik\u2019s lead in not crossing the picket line. (As you\u2019ll recall,\u00a0Bialik bowed out of Season 39\u2019s final weeks\u00a0in a public expression of solidarity with the show\u2019s striking writers, prompting Jennings to step in and close out the season.)<\/p>\n

Up until now, Sony refused to officially confirm that Jennings would handle hosting duties, although the GOAT champ-turned-emcee foreshadowed his return last month on Twitter.<\/a> Responding to a fan who called him a \u201cdisgrace\u201d for crossing the picket line, Jennings highlighted the section of Sony\u2019s recent press release noting that his predecessor, Alex Trebek, did the same thing during the last writers\u2019 strike in 2007-2008. <\/p>\n

ABC, meanwhile, did<\/em> announce in late August that Jennings would replace Bialik at the helm of Celebrity Jeopardy!<\/em>, when the prime time iteration returns on Sept. 27.<\/p>\n

As we previously reported, Season 40 of the mothership will feature \u2014 at least in the early going \u2014\u00a0both recycled questions\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0contestants\u00a0(from Season 37) amid the current writers\u2019 strike.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe, principally that it would not be fair to have new contestants,\u201d showrunner Michael Davies previously shared. \u201cMaking their first app<\/a>earance on the Alex Trebek stage, doing it with non-original material or as we\u2019ll talk about a combination of non-original material and material that was written pre-strike. And so we decided that really we needed to invite back and give a second chance in general<\/a> to players who probably thought that their chance to come back and play on the Alex Trebek stage had gone forever. So we\u2019re gonna open the season with a second chance tournament for players from Season 37 who lost their initial game, and winners from that\u00a0will advance to a Season 37 and Season 38 Champions Wild Card.\u201d (FYI: S38 contestants have already had their Second Chance competition.)<\/p>\n

Once the writers\u2019 strike ends, \u201cWe\u2019ll head into our Season 39 post-season, which will culminate with the [Tournament of Champions],\u201d Davies continued.\u00a0\u201cSo episodes at the beginning of the season for the Season 37 and Season 38 contestants, the material that we\u2019re gonna be using is a combination of material that our WGA writers wrote before the strike, which is still in the database and material that is being redeployed from multiple, multiple seasons of the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

This all comes as\u00a0questions continue to swirl around Bialik\u2019s future with the franchise, post-strike. On Aug. 18,\u00a0Jeopardy!<\/em>\u2018s official social<\/a> handles released a new poster celebrating the syndicated show\u2019s just-wrapped 39th season that featured Jennings but\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0Bialik.\u00a0Sony declined to comment on the apparent snub, although the artwork has since been deleted from the show\u2019s social handles.<\/p><\/div>\n
