Ron DeSantis pushed back against comments by President Joe Biden linking natural disasters to climate change.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"><\/partner-banner>\n<p>Scientists believe the warming planet is allowing hurricanes to strengthen faster and pack a bigger punch because they feed off warmer ocean water. Idalia went from a Category 1 storm to Category 4 in a day.<\/p>\n<p>But DeSantis seemed to dismiss the idea that climate change may have factored into Idalia\u2019s wrath, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/633003-history-tells-ron-desantis-climate-change-isnt-making-storms-stronger\/\">highlighting strong storms from decades past<\/a>, including one that hit the same region in 1896.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got to stop politicizing the weather and stop politicizing natural disasters,\u201d DeSantis said during a press conference last week in Yankeetown.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"><\/partner-banner><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"1286044002\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"><\/media-gallery-promo><\/p>\n<p>A few weeks earlier, during the first GOP presidential debate, DeSantis bristled when asked to raise his hand if he believes human activity is warming the planet, saying \u201cWe\u2019re not school children\u201d and launching into a criticism of the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"70726857007\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"><\/media-gallery-promo><\/p>\n<p>Pressed by the moderator \u2013 who earlier noted ocean temperatures off Florida hit an astonishing 101 degrees this summer \u2013 and another candidate about whether he was raising his hand to acknowledge human-caused climate change, DeSantis said: \u201cNo, no, no \u2013 I didn\u2019t raise a hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"><\/partner-inline><cta-atoms-container-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/cta\" class=\"spacer-large\"><\/cta-atoms-container-inline><\/p>\n<p>As Florida is battered by catastrophic storms, sets temperature records on land and sea and confronts a property insurance crisis worsened by climate factors, DeSantis has campaigned against action to stop climate change.<\/p>\n<p>He champions increasing fossil fuel production and vows to roll back the Biden administration\u2019s push for electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"><\/partner-banner>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach mirrors his broader strategy of hewing closely to the most conservative views within the GOP as he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tallahassee.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/06\/14\/ron-desantis-hits-donald-trump-on-abortion-immigration-crime\/70314918007\/\">challenges former President Donald Trump<\/a> from the right, although it <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonville.com\/story\/news\/local\/2019\/11\/03\/floridas-gop-leaders-are-starting-to-address-climate-change-again-after-long-ignoring-issue\/2380090007\/\">contrasts with the image DeSantis presented<\/a> when he first ran for governor.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"><\/partner-inline>\n<p>While DeSantis never embraced climate change as an important issue and was cautious about how he discussed it, his 2018 campaign centered around environmental advocacy. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonville.com\/story\/news\/local\/2019\/11\/03\/floridas-gop-leaders-are-starting-to-address-climate-change-again-after-long-ignoring-issue\/2380090007\/\">Climate-related initiatives <\/a>are part of his early environmental record.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis created an office to deal with the impacts of sea level rise and pushed for money to support such efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The governor\u2019s early environmental actions won him bipartisan praise and created a \u201csense of skeptical optimism\u201d that he might take stronger steps to tackle climate change, said Luigi Guadarrama, the political director for Sierra Club\u2019s Florida chapter.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"><\/partner-banner>\n<p>Those efforts never materialized, though, and DeSantis has become increasingly hostile to climate solutions, vetoing legislation and rejecting funding for such efforts as he seeks to lead a party that, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.cdn.yougov.com\/eqlqwyoypg\/econTabReport.pdf\">polling shows<\/a>, largely is comprised of voters who don\u2019t see the issue as important, even if the vast majority of Americans do.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DeSantis_once_lauded_as_Floridas_%E2%80%98green_governor\"><\/span>DeSantis once lauded as Florida&#8217;s &#8216;green governor&#8217;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019 hard right presidential primary campaign \u2013 which has highlighted his conservative positions on everything from immigration to abortion \u2013 is similar to how he approached the GOP primary in his first race for governor.<\/p>\n<p>During that campaign, DeSantis challenged former Florida Agriculture Commission Adam Putnam \u2013 a GOP establishment favorite \u2013 from the right. DeSantis hammered Putnam\u2019s moderate record on immigration and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly ran as a staunch conservative.<\/p>\n<p>On environmental issues, though, DeSantis tried to position himself to the left of Putnam, pledging to be a stronger advocate for clean water and slamming Putnam for receiving support from sugar farmers who are blamed for nutrient pollution that feeds devastating algae blooms.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"><\/partner-banner>\n<div id=\"videoWrap\" class=\"spacer-large videoWrap\" style=\"position:relative\"><media-video video-id=\"2537816002\" title=\"Video: Gov. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Andrew West, Fort Myers <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>-Press<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/media-video><\/div>\n<p>Florida was in the throes of major algae blooms that were fouling waterways.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"><\/partner-inline>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019 environmental advocacy largely focused on water quality, but it also touched on climate impacts.<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 10, 2019, just a few days after taking office, DeSantis signed an executive order that included a long list of environmental actions.<\/p>\n<p>Second to last on the list was the creation of a new state office to deal with sea level rise.<\/p>\n<p>The ordered created \u201cthe Office of Resilience and Coastal Protection to help prepare Florida&#8217;s coastal communities and habitats for impacts from sea level rise by providing funding, technical assistance and coordination among state, regional and local entities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The office was led by Florida\u2019s first chief resiliency officer, a move hailed as a major acknowledgment of the state&#8217;s unique vulnerability to climate change.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"><\/partner-banner>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/opinion\/editorials\/editorial-floridas-green-governor-20190114\/\">An editorial in the Tampa Bay Times lauded DeSantis as \u201cFlorida\u2019s green governor\u201d <\/a>and said he \u201chas done more to protect the environment and tackle climate change in one week than his predecessor did in eight years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"2806766001\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"><\/media-gallery-promo><\/p>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019 first budget proposal called for funding to address &#8220;the challenges of sea level rise, intensified storm events, and localized flooding.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis wasn\u2019t eager to tout himself as a climate advocate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not in the pews of the global warming leftists, I\u2019m just not,\u201d DeSantis said while running for governor.<\/p>\n<p>Yet compared with Rick Scott, the former governor turned U.S. senator whose administration was accused by state employees of prohibiting them from using the terms &#8220;climate change&#8221; and &#8220;global warming&#8221;, DeSantis was viewed as potentially more open to addressing the issue.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"><\/partner-banner>\n<p>\u201cEarly on he seemed to be doing things that were maybe greener than previous governors,\u201d said Brian Soden, a professor of atmospheric <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>s at the University of Miami who was among 10 Florida scientists who wrote a letter to Scott in 2014 offering to educate him on climate science.<\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2019s first chief resiliency officer only lasted six months on the job, though, and wasn\u2019t replaced for nearly two years.<\/p>\n<p><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"68542855007\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"><\/media-gallery-promo><\/p>\n<p>DeSantis moved from modest efforts to address climate impacts, while largely ignoring the greenhouse gas emissions at the root of the problem, to outright opposition to some emissions reduction efforts.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"><\/partner-inline>\n<p>DeSantis&#8217; presidential campaign did not respond to questions about the governor&#8217;s comments and positions on climate issues.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"><\/partner-banner>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%98Active_hostility_on_any_sort_of_climate_change_work\"><\/span>&#8216;Active hostility on any sort of climate change work&#8217;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>After any early focus on environmental issues, DeSantis shifted his attention to addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Environmental concerns occasionally resurfaced.<\/p>\n<p>The governor continued to target water quality improvements, frequently touting his administration\u2019s considerable financial support for Everglades restoration, even as environmentalists such a Guadarrama said the efforts didn\u2019t go far enough.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, DeSantis announced the state would spend $166 million from a legal settlement on buying more than 400 electric buses in Florida.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a win-win for air quality and advancing the state\u2019s efforts to bolster growing electric vehicle usage,\u201d the governor said at the time, while avoiding any mention of climate change.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"><\/partner-banner>\n<p>Yet after launching his presidential campaign this year, DeSantis issued two vetoes that riled climate activists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s gone from very tepid, flaccid dollar investments on certain conservation projects, and frankly inaction on climate change, to active hostility on any sort of climate change work, any sort of climate change issues, and even preventing potentially good climate work from happening,\u201d Guadarrama said of DeSantis\u2019 environmental record.<\/p>\n<p><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"1049051002\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"><\/media-gallery-promo><\/p>\n<p>In June, the governor nixed bipartisan legislation that was expected to result in the state buying more electric cars. The bill required state agencies to consider the cost of vehicles over their entire life, and was expected to favor electric cars because they have lower maintenance and fuel costs.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis didn\u2019t say why he vetoed the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Then in July, DeSantis vetoed funding that was needed to draw down $346 million in federal money to help low and moderate income people save money on electricity costs through energy-efficiency programs. While 71% of all voters described the issue as very important or somewhat important, only 45% of GOP voters felt the same.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"><\/partner-banner>\n<p>Some Republicans have been working to try and get the party more interested in the climate issue, which polls show is especially important for younger voters.<\/p>\n<p>A group of young conservatives concerned about environmental issues attended the first GOP presidential debate, and one of them asked a climate change question that was reframed by a debate moderator.<\/p>\n<p><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"11075558002\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"><\/media-gallery-promo><\/p>\n<p>The responses to the moderator\u2019s question ranged from Ramaswamy\u2019s \u201choax\u201d comment to Nikki Haley declaring: \u201cIs climate change real?
