While it is true that no soggy straws in the world will help as long as billion-dollar industries keep indiscriminately pumping oil out of the ground, it is also false to believe that our individual efforts do not matter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a new <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> published last week, called The Time is Now: Toolkit for Change, the creators have taken to a good old low-tech tabletop <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach to make people think about how, for instance, their relationship with <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> can have a more positive impact on the environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea is to gather a group of people \u2014 colleagues, friends or family \u2014 and to generate ideas and solutions, from an individual to a societal level, to what is undoubtedly one of the greatest generational challenges of our time. (Note: one of the game\u2019s originators, Niels Sipkema, is the Director of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TNW Programs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is how we got our hands on a pre-release edition.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on six of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the cards of the game present questions or problems involving an environmental component to be read out loud by one player. The others then pitch their solutions to the problem described on the card.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalboardroom.ft.com\/?utm_source=partner_website&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=global%7Cpartner%7Cevent_registration%7Cprospecting%7Cbau%7C2023_the_global_boardroom_7_global&amp;utm_content=TNW\" data-event-category=\"Article\" data-event-action=\"In Article Block\" data-event-label=\"The Financial Times' award-winning, flagship digital event, The Global Boardroom, is back!\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"ica-text__title\">The Financial Times&#8217; award-winning, flagship digital event, The Global Boardroom, is back!<\/p>\n<p>Join the FT, in partnership with TNW, 8-10 November, as we explore the most effective strategies for growth in the midst of geopolitical, economic and technological disruption \u2192<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reader then picks a winner, who places the card on an \u201caction canvas\u201d along vectors of what can be accomplished by ourselves (cycling to work), what can begin tomorrow, (say, choosing a sustainable caterer for your company event), what needs some more time and planning (investing in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbon removal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> startups), and what can be done with some help (solar panels on the roof of your building).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you cannot think of anything technologically groundbreaking, the prompt from the game\u2019s creators reads: \u201cIf you can\u2019t be serious, be funny, blunt, green, or smart.\u201d The TNW test group found themselves being all of those things \u2014 to varying degrees, depending on who you ask \u2014 during a runthrough of the game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_actions_we_take_is_a_vote_for_the_kind_of_world_we_want_to_live_in\"><\/span>The actions we take is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We may not all be quantum engineers that can develop the new clean fusion fuel of the future, but we can all make informed decisions and conscious choices in our relationship to the planet. (After learning about the carbon cost of digital clutter, at least one of the players rushed to delete a few thousand photos of their cat from the cloud.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every action we take \u2014 what we choose to consume, how we choose to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>, and where we choose to invest \u2014 is a vote cast for the kind of world we want to live in. Pointing a finger and saying \u201cbut they don\u2019t, so why should I,\u201d simply isn\u2019t good enough.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when choices regarding our habits are presented with an added appendage of guilt, or a serving of shame on the side, they become harder to maintain. Just look at yo-yo dieting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, when introduced with a sense of agency coupled with positive reinforcement (for instance, such as winning a pitch), we are much more likely to stick to the habits we are trying to build.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In either case, we have to have the, sometimes terribly inconvenient, conversations \u2014 for the sake of future generations.
