He was arrested by Mexican authorities in January and indicted on U.S. charges in April.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez was charged alongside two of his brothers, neither of whom are in custody. The trio are believed to be the more violent sect of the Sinaloa cartel and have taken over leadership of the group after their father\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe extradition of L\u00f3pez is testament to the significance of the ongoing cooperation between the American and Mexican governments on countering narcotics and other vital challenges, and we thank our Mexican counterparts for their partnership in working to safeguard our peoples from violent criminals,\u201d DHS advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall said in a statement Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The Sinaloa cartel is recognized as one of the driving forces bringing illegal fentanyl to the United States through Mexico.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis action is the most recent step in the Justice Department\u2019s effort to attack every aspect of the cartel\u2019s operations,\u201d Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Merrick Garland <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/el-chapo-mexico-united-states-sinaloa-9239796fda8db9cfa09fd65b139032cd\">said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cThe fight against the cartels has involved incredible courage by United States law enforcement and Mexican law enforcement and military service members, many of whom have given their lives in the pursuit of justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Between 2019 and 2021, fatal overdoses increased by <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roximately 94 percent, with an estimated 196 Americans dying each day from fentanyl, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-announces-charges-against-sinaloa-cartel-s-global-operation\">Justice Department said<\/a> in April.<\/p>\n<p>Fentanyl seizures by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have increased dramatically in recent years,<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/drug-seizure-statistics\"> according to CBP data<\/a>. The total amount of fentanyl seized in 2020 was surpassed in the first two months of the 2023 fiscal year.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>El Chapo was convicted in 2019 of running an international drug empire and smuggling operation.
