In conversation with Wenner,  David Marchese \u2014 <i>The Times Magazine<\/i>\u2019s \u201cTalk\u201d columnist and a former deputy editor at <i>Rolling Stone<\/i> \u2014 holds his former boss\u2019s feet to the fire on questions of journalistic integrity, including preferential treatment of his musician friends and the lack of fact-checking in the retracted story <i><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20141119200349\/http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/features\/a-rape-on-campus-20141119\">A Rape on Campus<\/a><\/i> .<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Early on in their discussion, Marchese asked Wenner whether he felt his friendships with high-profile musicians like Mick Jagger \u2014 to whose critically panned 2001 album <i>Goddess in the Doorway<\/i> he infamously gave the magazine\u2019s highest possible rating (five stars) \u2014 had helped or hindered his interviews of the years.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cBy and large, they helped,\u201d Wenner answered. \u201cBecause the interviews I did, they\u2019re not confrontational interviews. They\u2019re not interviews with politicians or business executives. These are interviews with artists. They\u2019re meant to be sympathetic, and they\u2019re meant to elicit from the artist as deep as possible thinking that they\u2019re willing to reveal. I think that the friendships were critical. I mean, the example of Mick Jagger \u2014 he just didn\u2019t give interviews to anybody, and he still doesn\u2019t. It\u2019s because we were friends, I got him to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Continuing in the same vein, Wenner was asked to clarify the statement in his forthcoming book, <i>The Masters: Conversations with Dylan, Lennon, Jagger, Townshend, Garcia, Bono, and Springsteen<\/i>, indicating he\u2019d let Bono edit his own interview. Responding to the question, Wenner revealed that he\u2019d done the same for multiple artists in the past, including John Lennon:<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-253468\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left block_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"block_quote_wrapper paragraph_wrapper\">\n  [They were] looking for grammatical stuff, usage stuff; changing a word here and there, if he\u2019d want to use a different word that\u2019s more precise; maybe something was too intimate and he decides he doesn\u2019t want to put it on the public record. I\u2019m h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y to do that with these subjects. As I said before, these are not meant to be confrontational interviews. These are profiles in a way. If I have to trade the level of trust that is necessary to get this kind of interview, to let people put a few things off the record, nothing of any value, maybe something about their kids or their family or not wanting to put down somebody. I let John Lennon edit his interview.\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-253469\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Another question of journalistic integrity arose when Marchese and Wenner discussed what was arguably <i>Rolling Stone<\/i>\u2019s biggest failure in recent history: a 2014 story based on a source\u2019s account of a brutal sexual assault at the University of Virginia, which turned out to have been made up. \u201cOther than this one key fact that the rape described actually was a fabrication of this woman, the rest of the story was bulletproof,\u201d Wenner said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-253470\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Later in the <i>Times<\/i> interview, Marchese asked Wenner to clarify a note in <i>The Masters<\/i>\u2019 introduction in which he explained that the lack of inclusion of Black and women artists in the book was because they weren\u2019t in his \u201czeitgeist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cWhen I was referring to the zeitgeist, I was referring to Black performers, not to the female performers,\u201d he began his response, starting off on shaky footing. \u201cThe selection was not a deliberate selection,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt was kind of intuitive over the years; it just fell together that way. The people had to meet a couple criteria, but it was just kind of my personal interest and love of them. Insofar as the women, just none of them were as articulate enough on this intellectual level.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            \u201cIt\u2019s not that they\u2019re not creative geniuses,\u201d he went on. It\u2019s not that they\u2019re inarticulate, although, go have a deep conversation with Grace Slick or Janis Joplin. Please, be my guest. You know, Joni was not a philosopher of rock \u2019n\u2019 roll. She didn\u2019t, in my mind, meet that test. Not by her work, not by other interviews she did. The people I interviewed were the kind of philosophers of rock.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cOf Black artists \u2014 you know, Stevie Wonder, genius, right? I suppose when you use a word as broad as \u2018masters,\u2019 the fault is using that word. Maybe Marvin Gaye, or Curtis Mayfield?
