“#Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka agree on one thing: Ryder Cup needs fans<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n FORT WORTH, Texas \u2014 They\u2019ll play a golf tournament this week, starting Thursday at Colonial Country Club. <\/p>\n

Even with no spectators, social<\/a> distancing, face coverings, hand sanitizer, COVID-19 testing and the so-called \u201cbubble\u2019\u2019 the PGA Tour has attempted to create in the first tournament back after a forced three-month hiatus, this week\u2019s Charles Schwab Challenge has a chance to bring some semblance of normalcy back not only to golf, but to sports.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think this week is very important because golf will be the center of the sports world,\u2019\u2019 Rory McIlroy said Wednesday. \u201cFor people to have something to watch on TV where they actually don\u2019t know the outcome I think is going to be nice for them.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Part of that return to normalcy will be the wrestling match between McIlroy and Brooks Koepka for the No. 1 world ranking \u2014 which McIlroy possesses at the moment, much to Koepka\u2019s chagrin.<\/p>\n

The two have built up a healthy, if slightly contentious, frenemy rivalry in the past year-plus, with Koepka publicly tweaking McIlroy for not having won a major championship since 2014 and McIlroy returning serve with some barbs of his own. Both players have four career major championships, but Koepka has won all four of his in the past three years, something Koepka has reminded McIlroy about.<\/p>\n

One thing the two players agree on is this: If no fans are allowed at the Ryder Cup, then there should be no Ryder Cup played in September, when it\u2019s scheduled at Whistling Straits.<\/p>\n

I could not agree more.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s one thing to stage these first four PGA Tour events without spectators. The Ryder Cup is a different animal altogether. Even though it\u2019s still golf, the Ryder Cup is almost a different sport than regular tournament golf. The Ryder Cup is closer to a football game<\/a> than a PGA Tour event.<\/p>\n

Koepka, currently ranked No. 2 behind McIlroy, on Wednesday revealed that he\u2019d consider sitting out the Ryder Cup if it\u2019s played without spectators.<\/p>\n

Koepka, who leads the U.S. Ryder Cup points list and is a lock to be a part of the team, was asked if he can see any scenario in which a player might boycott the event if the PGA of America opted to proceed with the Ryder Cup without fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

Asked if he might take a pass, Koepka said, \u201cPossibly,\u2019\u2019 adding, \u201cas players, I think we all know why they\u2019re playing or why we would play.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Money, of course, is that reason.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the only reason,\u2019\u2019 Koepka responded, rubbing his index finger and thumb together and adding, \u201cGive it to Johnny Football,\u2019\u2019 an ode to Johnny Manziel\u2019s signature move.<\/p>\n

When McIlroy was asked whether he, like Koepka, would consider not playing, he said he was \u201cpretty sure\u2019\u2019 the governing bodies \u201cwon\u2019t\u2019\u2019 conduct a Ryder Cup without fans and that he won\u2019t be faced with that decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, I love the Ryder Cup,\u2019\u2019 McIlroy said. \u201cBut I just can\u2019t see it going ahead without fans. I think there\u2019s enough people within the game that don\u2019t want the Ryder Cup to happ<\/a>en without fans.That\u2019s why it\u2019s either going to be played this year with fans if we can do that, or going to have to figure out kicking it down the road to a later date.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

The Colonial is the first of four PGA Tour events that are being played without spectators as sports slowly resurfaces from the forced pandemic pause. The Memorial, to be played in July, is the first event that\u2019s expected to allow fans, but at 20 percent the usual capacity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fans make that event, the fans make that special,\u2019\u2019 Koepka said. \u201cIt\u2019s different than any other golf tournament we play. It\u2019s a true sporting event. If we can have fans, that\u2019s perfect, and if we can\u2019t, it just seems kind of like an exhibition.\u2019\u2019 <\/p>\n

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming: Koepka attempting to chase down McIlroy and that No. 1 ranking.<\/p>\n

Beginning with this week, it looks like both players will play the first three of these four spectator-less events. So, game on. Bring it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I\u2019ve got eyes on Rory,\u2019\u2019 Koepka said. \u201cThat\u2019s the goal \u2014 to get back to No. 1 in the world. That\u2019s the whole point of playing \u2014 to be the best. If I do what I\u2019m supposed to do, if I take care of my business, then I don\u2019t see any reason why I couldn\u2019t get back to that.<\/p>\n

\u201cGetting injured [knee] and then when I started back up the first two months back playing, I dug myself a little bit of a hole. But you play good, you win, everything will take care of itself.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Even with no fans in attendance to cheer you on.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
