{"id":592035,"date":"2023-09-21T06:05:59","date_gmt":"2023-09-21T03:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/democrat-involved-in-la-racism-scandal-running-for-reelection\/"},"modified":"2023-09-21T06:05:59","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T03:05:59","slug":"democrat-involved-in-la-racism-scandal-running-for-reelection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/democrat-involved-in-la-racism-scandal-running-for-reelection\/","title":{"rendered":"#Democrat involved in LA racism scandal running for reelection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/AP22344343799957-e1670679054616.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A Los Angeles city councilman involved in a racism scandal last year announced Wednesday he would seek reelection, despite pressures from colleagues to resign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a statement Wednesday, Kevin de Le\u00f3n said he would seek another term after making \u201cunprecedented strides\u201d in his district, which runs through downtown Los Angeles, The\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/los-angeles-racism-biden-city-council-1475f7b10450afa7f30d36dc512ca311\">Associated Press (AP) reported.<\/a><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>De Le\u00f3n said he has been working on the city\u2019s homeless crisis and relativizing parks and public spaces, per The AP.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ethics.lacity.org\/elections\/#S266\">Campaign financial disclosures<\/a>\u00a0with Los Angeles City show de Leon as a candidate for the 14<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0District, though no contributions have been filed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A former state Senate leader, de Le\u00f3n made headlines last year after a recording of conversation from October 2021 between de Le\u00f3n, former council member Gil Cedillo, former President Nury Martinez and former L.A. County Labor Federation President Ron Herrera was leaked first on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reddit<\/a> and later reported by the Los Angles Times.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Martinez was heard on the recording saying numerous racist comments, including saying that L.A. District Attorney George\u00a0Gasc\u00f3n\u00a0is \u201cwith the Blacks\u201d\u00a0and calling certain Mexican immigrants in the city\u2019s Koreatown \u201cshort, dark people.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The recording also revealed the group\u2019s discussions over limiting the voting power of Black residents and increasing that of Latinos through redistricting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Martinez resigned as council president and from her seat while Herrera stepped down amid the backlash from the recording.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>De Le\u00f3n and Cedillo apologized for the conversation\u00a0but refused to resign.\u00a0Cedillo lost a reelection bid last year, ending his term in December. <\/p>\n<p>De Le\u00f3n\u2019s return to the council chambers after a two-month hiatus reportedly\u00a0prompted protests\u00a0in the meeting room as well as social media posts from fellow council members who pushed back against his return.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>State Assemblyman Miguel Santiago, who is also running in the 14<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0District, called for de Le\u00f3n to resign and not seek another term, The AP reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cEnough is enough,\u201d Santiago said, per The AP. \u201cWhile he has been consumed with scandal, he has failed his district. \u2026 The people want change.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ysabel Jurado, a tenant rights attorney running in the 14th district, responded to de Le\u00f3n\u2019s reelection bid Wednesday,<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YsabelJuradoLA\/status\/1704589014895050883\"> telling a reporter <\/a>with the L.A. Daily <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> that de Le\u00f3n has been a \u201cdistraction\u201d in the district over the past year. <\/p>\n<p>As of Wednesday, campaign finance filings show a total of 11 candidates running for de Le\u00f3n\u2019s seat. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The primary election is set for March 5, 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
