Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) force him to have a security detail amid threats on his life.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis and other Republicans have repeatedly attacked Fauci \u2014 who served in the Trump and Biden administrations \u2014 over pandemic policies including mask mandates and the COVID vaccine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the one that had to, in an uncomfortable way\u2026 disagree with the President of the United States. That was very painful for me\u2026 but I felt that in order to just maintain my own personal professional integrity and responsibility to the American public that I had to say it like it was and I had to do it publicly,\u201d Fauci said in an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mehdirhasan\/status\/1704971706417160361?s=46&amp;t=bWA3waiBGyLuWF32llS9MA\">MSNBC interview Thursday<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat triggered a degree of negativity towards me on the part of the far-right,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Host Mehdi Hasan played a clip of DeSantis at a rally last year in which he says, \u201csomeone needs to grab that little elf and chuck him across the Potomac,\u201d referencing Fauci.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Attacks like that encourage actual acts of violence, Fauci said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomebody that doesn\u2019t know anything about me, who\u2019s crazy, says, \u2018Wow, I\u2019m going to go get that person\u2019 or that person should be killed or that person should be prosecuted. That\u2019s the reason I have to have security,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGov. DeSantis doesn\u2019t personally want to hurt me. He\u2019s triggering people who are bad and really want to hurt people. That\u2019s the problem,\u201d Fauci added.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Criticisms of the Trump and Biden administrations\u2019 COVID response have been a sizable part of DeSantis\u2019 presidential campaign, including digs at Fauci.
