\n After lobbying against it for years, App<\/a>le was recently forced to make a change it didn\u2019t want to make. To comply with the EU\u2019s new rules on standardising mobile chargers, the tech giant has ditched its Lightning charging cable for a USB-C wire.<\/p>\n

Now, Thierry Breton, Commissioner for Internal Market, is asking the company to take a step further. That is, \u201copening up gates to competitors,\u201d he tweeted, following a meeting with Apple\u2019s Tim Cook on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Apple has meticulously guarded a closed ecosystem for its hardware and software products, but Breton said that\u2019s no longer possible under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) \u2014 the bloc\u2019s newly-adopted pro-competition regulation.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the company was designated as one of the (initially) six \u201cgatekeepers\u201d of the EU\u2019s digital market, which will have to comply with a series<\/a> of strict do\u2019s and don\u2019ts. For example, they\u2019ll need to allow consumers to uninstall pre-installed apps and replace them with third-party equivalents.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe it the electronic wallet, browsers or app stores, consumers using an Apple iPhone should be able to benefit from competitive services by a range of providers,\u201d the commissioner told<\/a> Reuters after the meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cEU regulation fosters innovation, without compromising on security and privacy,\u201d he added, apparently dismissing\u2019s Apple\u2019s arguments in favour of maintaining a closed ecosystem<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the company\u2019s hurdles in Europe don\u2019t seem to end. Just two weeks ago, France suspended sales<\/a> of the iPhone 12, following tests that showed exceeding radiation levels. Although Apple refuted the claims, it pledged to provide a fix, and it has now reportedly<\/a> submitted a software update for review by the French authorities.\n <\/div>\n
