Its price is almost unheard of in the modern Canadian real estate market: $399,900 for five bedrooms, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less than the going price for a 400-square-foot studio in downtown Toronto<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> But there\u2019s also the Canadian-history factor\u2014the home is more than 115 years old and counts a former prime minister as one of its past owners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1249444 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-18-2560x1707.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-18-2560x1707.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-18-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-18-843x562.jpg 843w, https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-18-1000x667.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\"\/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthur Meighen was born in 1874 in Anderson, Ontario, and moved to Portage La Prairie to work as a lawyer before entering politics. He bought the Edwardian in 1916 and lived there with his wife and three children for the next 12 years. During that time, Meighen shuttled back and forth from Ottawa, where he served as prime minister twice\u2014once from 1920 to 1921, as Robert Borden\u2019s successor, and then again in 1926. Meighen\u2019s Manitoba dwelling may be a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fraction of the size<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the current PM\u2019s residence on 24 Sussex Drive, but unlike the latter, its structure has stood the test of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><strong>READ:\u00a0For $2.4 million, you can buy this net-zero corrugated-steel home in Ontario<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1249632 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-35-2560x1707.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-35-2560x1707.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-35-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-35-843x562.jpg 843w, https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-35-1000x667.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\"\/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Meighen sold the property in 1928\u2014he was headed to Ottawa for a full-time Senate gig\u2014McKillop says the home changed owners several times and the house slowly lost its stately charm. The insulation thinned, the parlour\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rustic wood flooring<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and baseboards cracked, and the paint in the home\u2019s meeting room\u2014once a site of spirited political discourse\u2014faded with time. In 1993, a local carpenter and cabinet maker named Eric Vieweg purchased the home as a personal restoration project. Over the next 30 years, Vieweg (the current seller) carefully refurbished the home, upgrading the plumbing and wiring,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reshingling the roof, installing new hardwood floors,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">updating the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">millwork on the original oak archways and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crown moulding<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and reinsulating the house from top to bottom. \u201cHe was the perfect owner for this place,\u201d says McKillop. \u201cA history buff who knew what to update and what to preserve.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1249445 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-15-2560x1707.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-15-2560x1707.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-15-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-15-843x562.jpg 843w, https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/131-Dufferin-Ave-E-15-1000x667.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vieweg made sure to maintain key artifacts from the home\u2019s past lives.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original staircase is still standing; a century-old claw-foot tub in the home\u2019s primary bathroom is still functional;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the wooden pillars, wall panelling and recessed ceiling in the dining area are all intact.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were a few modifications, however: Vieweg built out custom cabinets and a corner pantry in the kitchen and laid down new granite countertops. He also turned the parlour into a cozy living area with a brand-new gas fireplace. (She suspects that ever-climbing interest rates and pandemic uncertainty hung over well into 2022.) But since the home was relisted in early September, McKillop has received several bites, some from passionate history buffs and some from inquisitive buyers who are attracted to the home\u2019s central location: it\u2019s shouting distance from a network of walking trails, the Portage Golf Club and Crescent Lake, and situated just south of Saskatchewan Avenue, the town\u2019s main drag.
