Ron DeSantis (R) was among those who let loose on the former president during Wednesday night\u2019s debate \u2014 a notable shift from a candidate who had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly been\u00a0cautious about alienating Trump\u2019s loyal base.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Such attacks open a new phase of the primary as Trump\u2019s rivals grow increasingly desperate with only a few months before early voting begins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s getting late, and so if your campaign is going to make a move, now\u2019s the time,\u201d said Republican strategist Nicole Schlinger.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump, who has maintained a double-digit lead over his rivals in most national and state polls, continues to exert a strong influence over the Republican Party. For that reason, many GOP presidential candidates have been reluctant to bash him, worried about alienating the all-important base.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday night\u2019s event suggested that might be changing. DeSantis and others were quick to criticize the former president over his absence from the stage. Trump has cited his large lead in the polls as his reason for not attending the debates, and he is expected to skip the third one in early November, as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis, who has most consistently placed in second in polling,\u00a0arguably took\u00a0the biggest shift in approach to Trump, more directly addressing Trump after spending much of the campaign dancing around the former president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDonald Trump is missing in action. He should be on this stage tonight,\u201d DeSantis said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Other candidates also chimed in to hit Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who has by far been the most\u00a0vocal in criticizing the front-runner, spoke directly to Trump through the camera, arguing Trump was skipping the debate because he is\u00a0afraid of being challenged.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0watching, OK? And\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0not here tonight not because of polls and not because of your indictments.\u00a0You\u2019re\u00a0not here tonight because\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0afraid of being on this stage and defending your record,\u201d Christie said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>GOP strategist Matt Mackowiak said the attack on Trump skipping the debates is strong because \u201cthere\u2019s\u00a0really not\u00a0a good answer.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing a poll as justification for not answering questions may be strategically defensible, but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0sort of hard\u00a0to convince voters that\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0above it,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mackowiak added that these attacks are about trying to \u201cgoad\u201d Trump into appearing at the debate to allow them to \u201cprosecute the case against Trump\u201d in a \u201cdirect confrontation.\u201d He said a sustained attack will be needed for\u00a0the criticism to stick, but it could matter in early-voting states when the Republican National Committee holds future debates in states like Iowa.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Leading candidates have experienced disappointing performances in early states after skipping a debate there.\u00a0Former President Reagan in 1980 and Trump in 2016 lost the Iowa caucuses after skipping debates in the Hawkeye State, while former President George W. Bush suffered a loss in New Hampshire in 2000\u00a0after being late to join the debates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Schlinger, who is based in Iowa,\u00a0emphasized that candidates\u00a0will benefit during this period of the race from being \u201con the ground\u201d in the early states\u00a0and sharing their message directly with voters. She said time is running out for candidates to win over these voters, meaning they need to set themselves apart from Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Strategists said Trump is not likely to have much incentive to\u00a0participate\u00a0in these debates despite the attacks\u00a0unless he believes he will face some political consequence, which has not happened yet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe are entering the\u00a0time in which\u00a0caucus-goers are going to\u00a0vet\u00a0these candidates seriously and start making up their mind,\u201d Schlinger said. \u201cAnd truly, we have less time than the calendar really\u00a0indicates\u00a0because\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0going to have a hard\u00a0stop at Thanksgiving.\u00a0You\u2019re\u00a0gonna\u00a0have a hard stop at Christmas.\u00a0So\u00a0there is\u00a0time,\u00a0but we are in\u00a0a critical period now.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Kall, an expert on presidential debates and the director of debate at the University of Michigan, said\u00a0the candidates learned from seeing the first debate not \u201cmove the needle\u201d at all in terms of Trump\u2019s lead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Candidates like former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and former Vice President Mike Pence received praise for their performances in the first debate, but Trump\u2019s lead remained as prominent as before, though Haley did see some improvement in the polls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Kall said the candidates began criticizing Trump more, especially for not attending the debate, in the days leading up to the event,\u00a0demonstrating\u00a0they are bringing their attacks more to the campaign trail.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey all\u00a0came to the conclusion\u00a0that even if there are individual solid performances in the debate, unless you accompany that with\u00a0bringing numbers down and declining,\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0not going to make up any solid ground,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The candidates on stage also went after Trump on a few policy issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>DeSantis slammed Trump for comments he made earlier this month, when the former president called the six-week abortion ban DeSantis signed a \u201cterrible mistake.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s\u00a0had a lot to say about that,\u201d the governor said. \u201cHe should be here explaining his comments to try to say that pro-life protections are somehow a terrible thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Haley, who has said during her campaign that she will be open about areas in which she agrees and disagrees with Trump,\u00a0said the former president only focused on trade relations with China and didn\u2019t address other areas, like the flow of fentanyl into the United States\u00a0and intellectual property theft.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is where President Trump went wrong,\u201d she said on the debate stage. \u201cHe focused on trade with China. He\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0focus on the fact that they were buying up our farmland. He\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0focus on the fact that they were killing Americans.\u00a0He\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0focus on the fact that they were stealing\u00a0$600 billion\u00a0in intellectual property.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of these policy issues could prove potent for Republicans in early-voting states.\u00a0Iowa is known for\u00a0a strong base\u00a0of evangelical voters who are likely to\u00a0prioritize restricting abortion, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/471494\/americans-continue-view-china-greatest-enemy.aspx#:~:text=On%20the%20other%20hand%2C%20the,%2C%20with%2032%25%20naming%20Russia.\">while polling\u00a0shows<\/a>\u00a0three-quarters of Republicans view China as the country\u2019s biggest adversary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But some strategists said the attacks were still relatively minor and\u00a0needed\u00a0to be stepped up significantly to have an effect.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The debate turned raucous in places, but GOP strategist Alex Conant said the candidates on stage seemed more interested in going after each other rather than Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery moment during the debate stage talking to\u00a09 million people\u00a0not about why\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0a better candidate than Trump is a waste of everyone\u2019s time.\u00a0So\u00a0I think every question they should be pivoting towards why they are better than Donald Trump,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir biggest complaint seemed to be that he wasn\u2019t on the debate stage, which is not a salient attack since he suffered no penalty for skipping the first event,\u201d Conant added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New Hampshire-based Republican strategist Mike Dennehy said the debates typically have been \u201cextremely important\u201d in helping and hurting candidates, but the effect has been diluted because of Trump\u2019s absence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said the candidates would be able to land more effective attacks on Trump if they unified to have a \u201cconcerted critique\u201d targeting him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the candidates had gotten together on this debate and even on the Nov. 8 debate, I believe the more candidates you have being critical of Donald Trump, the better,\u201d Dennehy said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said he expects the candidates to pick up their attacks on Trump because they are feeling pressure as time passes.\u00a0But he argued they will be in trouble if they cannot show some degree of success soon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0not another candidate in the 30 percent range by Dec. 1, then they all need to be asking, \u2018Is this worth it?\u2019\u201d Dennehy said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
