\n After a three year break following his exit from \u201cVikings,\u201d Travis Fimmel returns to TV in sci-fi epic \u201cRaised By Wolves.\u201d<\/p>\n

Premiering Thursday on HBO Max, the show is executive produced by Ridley Scott, who also directed the first two episodes. Set in the future, it follows two androids raising human children on a mysterious planet called Kepler-22B after a war has destroyed Earth.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was never going to do TV again [after \u2018Vikings\u2019],\u201d Fimmel, 41, tells The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just didn\u2019t want to commit to something so long. But because of Ridley\u2019s involvement, I kind of had no choice. I just said \u2018yes\u2019 without reading the script<\/a>. Ridley is such an iconic filmmaker, it\u2019s an actor\u2019s dream.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Australian born Fimmel, who began his career as a model, is best known for playing the cunning chieftain Ragnar Lothbrok on History\u2019s hit \u201cVikings\u201d from 2013-17 \u2014 until Ragnar met his end in the fourth season by being thrown into a pit of snakes. Following that departure, Fimmel turned to the big screen, starring in movies<\/a> such as \u201cWarcraft\u201d and \u201cLean on Pete.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cQuite often [in television] you\u2019ve got to sign a thing for 6 years, and that\u2019s a big chunk of your life to do the same thing. I\u2019d rather do different things,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s some great storytelling on TV because of the time you get to follow characters\u2019 journeys. But yeah, I\u2019d rather do a film and then go away and never have to do that one character again.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the prospect of working with Ridley Scott was an offer he couldn\u2019t refuse, so he found himself on the small screen again in \u201cRaised by Wolves.\u201d He stars as Marcus, a warrior-priest in Mithraic, the religion that had a civil war with atheists prior to the events of the show. He\u2019s part of the Ark, a spaceship heading to planet Kepler-22b to start a new society. They soon find themselves clashing with the android known as Mother (Amanda Colin), as conflict simmers again.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the future on this show, the world is destroyed because of people not respecting each other\u2019s beliefs. I\u2019m a complete nonbeliever in anything, but I\u2019m very happy for people to have their own beliefs; whatever makes them feel good. I just wish people respected other people\u2019s beliefs, even if they\u2019re different than their own,\u201d says Fimmel.<\/p>\n

To make matters more complicated in \u201cRaised By Wolves,\u201d Marcus has a backstory involving a secret identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarcus was a child soldier, and all he knows is just to survive. He\u2019s never had loved ones around him,\u201d says Fimmel.<\/p>\n

\u201cI enjoyed exploring all of his flaws. The harder stuff is always more interesting, to me\u2026 the mental thing of finding out ways where you can mess with the audience and make them not sure if you\u2019re a good guy or a bad guy, and what your motives are. I always enjoy that aspect \u2014 making them try to guess what I\u2019m thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show filmed in South Africa, using its rugged landscape as its basis for the desert planet.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful country. I did safaris, it was amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aside from \u201cRaised by Wolves,\u201d Fimmel is also working on a series about Wyatt Earp for History, where he\u2019ll produce, write, and star as the legendary Old West lawman. But that\u2019s been put on the back burner due to the pandemic, which he\u2019s spent fixing up his ranch in Calif., he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cVikings\u201d is also getting a spinoff series on Netflix called \u201cValhalla,\u201d premiering at an unannounced date. When asked if there\u2019s a chance he could appear in it, Fimmel says, \u201cNo, but I\u2019d love to go and maybe direct one [episode] or go spend time with the crew. I love all those people. It was a great experience, and I look forward to watching the spin-off.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
