2015\u2019s Anomalisa<\/em> sounds like it nearly broke Charlie Kaufman<\/strong>. Well, not the movie itself, but more the reaction to it \u2013 or, even more specifically, the lack of reaction to it. The filmmaker, who directed 2008\u2019s Synecdoche, New York<\/em>, 2015\u2019s Anomalisa<\/em>, and is back with this year\u2019s I\u2019m Thinking of Ending Things<\/em>, says he \u201cjust stopped caring\u201d about directing after Anomalisa<\/em> flopped at the box office.<\/span><\/p>\n

Charlie Kaufman does not make commercial movies<\/a>. His directorial efforts have received critical acclaim and awards attention, but they often don\u2019t perform well enough financially to encourage a studio to throw a bunch of money his way so he can make another movie. That\u2019s why Netflix seems such a good fit for his newest movie \u2013 the numbers don\u2019t matter. But according to him, \u201cif this is the last movie I get to make, I\u2019m okay with that.\u201d That\u2019s what he said in a new interview with Uproxx, where he explained why he \u201cjust stopped caring\u201d about directing movies:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what happ<\/a>ened? We\u2019ve hit\u00a0Anomalisa<\/em>. We made it ourselves. We made it in the middle of nothing in the middle of nowhere. We didn\u2019t know what we had. We finished it. We started sending it to Telluride and Venice and Toronto [film festivals], and these people went\u00a0crazy<\/em>\u00a0for it. And it won! And everybody was bidding on it to buy it, because we didn\u2019t have distribution. And we won the Silver Lion at Venice. And I thought,\u00a0holy cow<\/em>. And then\u2026nothing happened. The movie didn\u2019t do any business. And I really felt weird about that, because this is the second time that\u2019s happened to me. And it\u2019s like, I just stopped caring. And this thing with Netflix is\u2026it doesn\u2019t matter. There\u2019s no box office. The movie will play on Netflix forever \u2013 and it won\u2019t disappear in a week because the box office isn\u2019t doing well. And that\u2019s fine with me. And so, that sort of pushed me in the direction of not caring I think. Not that I don\u2019t want to work or not be interested. It just means that it\u2019s outside of my control.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
