{"id":593169,"date":"2023-10-04T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-04T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/putin-reignites-tensions-over-wagners-future-with-successor-push\/"},"modified":"2023-10-04T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-10-04T10:00:00","slug":"putin-reignites-tensions-over-wagners-future-with-successor-push","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/putin-reignites-tensions-over-wagners-future-with-successor-push\/","title":{"rendered":"#Putin reignites tensions over Wagner\u2019s future with successor push"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/putinvladimir_082423_AP_.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>oint a successor to lead the Wagner Group is reigniting public tensions over the future of the mercenary company.<\/p>\n<p>Wagner\u2019s next leader has been unclear after the death of the company\u2019s founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin, in an August plane crash, however Putin has moved swiftly to exert more oversight after Prigozhin led an aborted rebellion against him in June.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But senior Wagner fighters may be trying to hold onto their influence. There are rumors circulating on Wagner Telegram channels that fighters could back Prigozhin\u2019s son, the 25-year-old Pavel Prigozhin, or someone else connected to Wagner\u2019s old guard to lead the military company.<\/p>\n<p>While Wagner officers are still resistant to a Kremlin-controlled command structure, they are unlikely to mount a challenge anytime soon. <\/p>\n<p>Putin has pushedto absorb the company into the Russian military while maintaining the name and brand, which continues to wield power and influence across the globe. Last week, he also announced that he had tapped Andrei Troshev, a retired Russian colonel known by his call sign \u201cgray-hair\u201d and a former Wagner commander, to oversee all mercenary forces in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Schmidt, an associate professor of international affairs and national security for the University of New Haven, said the latest developments have shown Wagner is \u201cno longer independent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWagner Group as a coherent entity is over,\u201d he said. \u201cThe story of Wagner Group is in its last chapter. And really what we\u2019re talking about now is an epilogue well beyond its peak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Putin\u2019s deputy defense minister, Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, has <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ed abroad to several countries in Africa, apparently to shore up Russian support amid questions about global Wagner operations after the rebellion. That suggests he will play a key role in overseeing the company\u2019s future for the Kremlin.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Analysts believe Putin has absorbed the newest Wagner fighters, who are largely made up of convicts pulled from prison by Prigozhin to fight in Ukraine. They will fall under Troshev\u2019s command in Ukraine but effectively will be controlled by Yevkurov and the Russian Defense Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, analysts believe, veteran Wagner fighters will be left to their work across the globe, mostly in the Middle East and Africa where they have brought benefits for the Kremlin through ties with local governments to exploit natural resources. Those soldiers will likely continue operating under the Wagner banner, but only in name and so long as they don\u2019t cross Putin.<\/p>\n<p>Sean McFate, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, said the \u201ceasy problem\u201d was to nationalize the newer Wagner fighters, while the much more difficult challenge is managing what he calls the \u201cold guard\u201d in Wagner.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Many of the senior fighters detest the new Wagner recruits and have long disliked Troshev, explained McFate, a former U.S. paratrooper and former mercenary who has personally talked with Wagner members in the past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe big question is, if [Putin] can\u2019t get those Wagner Group guys in Africa \u2014 or at least a significant portion of them \u2014 under his thumb, then he loses a great power competition against the U.S. and China in Africa,\u201d said McFate.<\/p>\n<p>McFate said that Putin will need Wagner as an \u201cinvisible hand in Africa that does the Kremlin\u2019s bidding,\u201d but will have to ensure the old guard is well paid and has enough independence to be content.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIf Russia tries to be heavy-handed and tries to pull these guys back into Ukraine, or tries to put them on a short leash in Africa,\u201d McFate said, \u201cthat may not go well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wagner Group has not entirely surrendered to the Kremlin, though it\u2019s doubtful the company has enough power to defy Putin.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/wagnernew\/10584\">In a Telegram post<\/a>, a main Wagner channel hinted they would not be supporting Troshev, one of the founding members of Wagner who was the chief of staff for the company\u2019s operations in Syria.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The channel said Troshev has served as an inter<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>ry between Wagner and the Russian government but lost his command after the rebellion, which Prigozhin loyalists call the \u201cMarch of Justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter sharp criticism of the March of Justice and Troshev\u2019s perception of this event in a sharply negative way, the attitude towards him within the company worsened,\u201d the channel wrote, adding rather cryptically: \u201cTherefore, rest assured \u2014 the orchestra has played and will play by its own rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The British Defense Ministry said before the rebellion that Troshev may have encouraged Wagner fighters to sign contracts that would have allowed the Kremlin to gain more influence over them. The contracts were a major impetus toward the rebellion.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cMany Wagner veterans likely consider him a traitor,\u201d British <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DefenceHQ\/status\/1707995694739452316?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1707995694739452316%7Ctwgr%5E1cd7786f35de694305d0d67d79f73b02aaebb766%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.businessinsider.com%2Fwagner-boss-andrei-troshev-likely-seen-as-traitor-putin-russia-2023-9\">government analysts wrote on X<\/a>, the platform formerly known as Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, another Wagner-affiliated channel shared Prigozhin\u2019s will, which shows that his son Pavel would inherit most of his fortune \u2014 including Concord, the umbrella company that included the late mercenary chief\u2019s ventures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Institute for the Study of War <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.understandingwar.org\/backgrounder\/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-october-1-2023\">assessed this week<\/a> that \u201csome Wagner personnel are interested in rallying around a Prigozhin-linked alternative\u201d to Troshev, indicating it was possible Pavel could assume control.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>However, the analysts interviewed for this story cast doubt that Pavel would actually assume control of the company, even if under the influence of prominent Wagner officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is ridiculous. He\u2019s an heir apparent, and it would be the dumbest move that Putin could do to give Prigozhin\u2019s son some kind of platform from which to avenge his father\u2019s death,\u201d said Schmidt from the University of New Haven. \u201cThat is the farthest thing from likely.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
