\n Ashtyn Davis is a beautiful mystery.<\/p>\n

He was a mystery in college at Cal-Berkeley, where he walked onto the track team, then onto the football team and became a star safety.<\/p>\n

Now he\u2019s a mystery to the Jets, who drafted him in the third round in April and probably don\u2019t have any idea how many critical roles he can play for a team that\u2019s so desperate for difference-makers.<\/p>\n

Davis, too, is a mystery to even his own family, with whom he\u2019s extremely close.<\/p>\n

Take his left arm for instance: It\u2019s a canvas of body art, adorned with a sleeve of what he described as \u201ceightish\u2019\u2019 tattoos \u2014 with the meaning of each image a mystery to even those closest to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey all have meaning, but they\u2019re all personal,\u2019\u2019 Davis told The Post after practice Wednesday. \u201cI get them for me and not for any other reason. That\u2019s just kind of how I\u2019ve been rolling. All for me.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Not even for his family.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo this day, I still don\u2019t know what each and every one of the tattoos\u2019 personal meanings are to him,\u2019\u2019 Ashtyn\u2019s mother, Christine, told The Post. \u201cI know what one or two of them mean, but when I try to get him to tell me, he says, \u2018Someday mom, someday I\u2019ll tell you.\u2019 \u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

That day hasn\u2019t yet arrived.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has a story and reasons for all of them, but he won\u2019t clue any of us in,\u2019\u2019 Ashtyn\u2019s sister Lexi told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cI let their minds wander,\u2019\u2019 said Davis, who\u2019s having a standout summer with the Jets in this COVID-truncated training camp. \u201cThey all make little assumptions and I tell them \u2018yes\u2019 to everything regardless of whether it\u2019s close or not.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Lexi said, \u201cI have guesses. There are three skulls on his arm and one of them is smaller than the other two and two of them have roses on them, so I would assume that\u2019s my dad, my mom and me. But that\u2019s just a guess. It could just be three skulls because he wanted three skulls.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Christine said, \u201cThere\u2019s an eye and I think that is him keeping an eye on himself. That\u2019s all I know. He doesn\u2019t tell me. They\u2019re very personal to him.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Davis said the \u201conly [tattoo] I really talk about is the one about my dad,\u2019\u2019 referring to the image on his left wrist commemorating his father Sean\u2019s sobriety anniversary.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s where it all started. Ashtyn and Lexi got matching tattoos on their left wrists as a surprise for their father on Oct. 20, 2016, with the art depicting mind, body and spirit, protected by God, and including his sobriety date \u2014 Oct. 20, 2008 \u2014 in Roman numerals.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not really into inking his body, but he went in the next day and got the same tattoo on his left wrist,\u2019\u2019 Davis said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat one for our dad was his first one, the beginning of it,\u2019\u2019 Lexi said. \u201cHere we are four years later and Ashtyn\u2019s covered in them.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Davis said he hasn\u2019t added any new ink since being drafted to commemorate this next phase in his life \u2014 perhaps a green Jets logo or a \u201cJ-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets\u2019\u2019 slogan.<\/p>\n

He said something Jets-related is \u201cpossible\u2019\u2019 eventually, but added, \u201cI\u2019ve got other things I need to do first.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

First priority, Davis said, is a tattoo for his former Cal teammate, cornerback Bryce Turner, who died Jan. 6, 2019, after collapsing during a workout near his home over the holidays.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to get something to honor him and remember him by,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, Davis\u2019 singular focus is \u201ctrying to make an impact in any way I can to help the Jets win.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can tell the guy is super sharp [and he] makes a ton of plays,\u2019\u2019 coach Adam Gase said Wednesday. \u201cIt seems like the ball finds him. The guy is like the Energizer bunny out there. He never stops, and it\u2019s really impressive.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

With starting safety Marcus Maye sitting out the past couple of practices with an injury, Davis has been running with the starting defense, calling those reps \u201creally valuable\u2019\u2019 to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to make an impact in any way I can,\u2019\u2019 said Davis, who\u2019s going to be special teams coordinator Brant Boyer\u2019s best friend with his ability to do everything from cover kicks and punts to kick return.<\/p>\n

Davis drew bemusement from writers on a post-practice Zoom call Wednesday when he revealed that he didn\u2019t even bring a car from his California home to New Jersey, saying that he\u2019s walking 15 minutes to work every day.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t see the necessity of having a car,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cI\u2019m pretty focused. I don\u2019t get too distracted. I\u2019m a pretty driven individual.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

You have to some kind of special drive to be a walk-on to not just a major college track program but a football program, too.<\/p>\n

The beautiful mystery in front of the Jets is figuring out everything this special player can bring to them.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
