Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said that an open Democratic primary would make President Biden a \u201cstronger candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When MSNBC\u2019s Joe Scarborough asked Manchin on \u201cMorning Joe\u201d if Biden was the \u201cbest choice\u201d to beat former President Trump, he said that he didn\u2019t know \u201cwho else was out there.\u201d He suggested that an open primary could benefit the sitting president, saying that he could learn from his opponents.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been scared, because I\u2019ve always never been unopposed,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that was always good. You know, let me tell you something, I\u2019ve learned from every race I was ever in. I\u2019ve learned from my opponents. I got something wrong. I\u2019ve always said, I\u2019ve never met the first person, is always wrong. The person running against me, I got knowledge from them. I could pick something, I could use it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]he thing about it would make Joe probably a stronger candidate,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Manchin has butted heads with Biden repeatedly over the past few years, including voting against a string of Biden nominees, including Jared Bernstein, to become Biden\u2019s top economic adviser, and several judicial nominees.\u00a0He also delivered a blow to Biden\u2019s Build Back Better agenda in 2021 when he\u00a0opposed spending levels\u00a0proposed in the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Manchin has\u00a0sparked some speculation\u00a0of his own for 2024 as he has yet to announce whether he will seek reelection for his own Senate seat. He has repeatedly flirted with a third-party run for the White House, as he has kept close ties with political organization No Labels.<\/p>\n<p>There are only two prominent primary challengers to Biden in 2024: Marianne Williamson and\u00a0\u00a0Robert F. Kennedy Jr. However, Democrat Rep. Dean Phillips (Minn.)\u00a0has not yet ruled out\u00a0a primary challenge to Biden for next year.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips has been\u00a0toying with a possible White House bid\u00a0against Biden for months and has also reiterated the need for a competitive Democratic primary.
