\n Dicks: The Musical<\/em> director Larry Charles is opening up about why he steers away from being involved with big-budget blockbuster projects.<\/p>\n

\n On Thursday\u2019s episode of the WTF with Marc Maron <\/em>podcast<\/a>, the Borat <\/em>director, who prefers to put his energy into indie movies<\/a> and TV shows, slammed the current Hollywood system.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cI try to make things like Dangerous Comedy<\/em> or this movie [Dicks: The Musical<\/em>] \u2014 this movie\u2019s a very low-budget movie,\u201d Charles said. \u201cPolitically for me, ethically for me, I find it offensive when movies cost $250 million and the world is in the state that it\u2019s in. So I\u2019m also looking to make a statement in the way these things are made.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Charles has seen the way comedy and media<\/a> are disbursed around the world during his travel<\/a>s for his four-part Netflix docuseries, Larry Charles\u2019 Dangerous World of Comedy<\/em>, which is why he is especially critical of what he called a \u201cmedia monopoly system\u201d in the United States.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cKind of an authoritarian big brother sort of thing that we \u2014 they\u2019ve figured out over the years, they don\u2019t have to make you, they don\u2019t have to scare you, they have to seduce you,\u201d the Seinfeld<\/em> producer said. \u201cSo we\u2019re all seduced by great TV shows and great movies and we\u2019re distracted by those things, and we\u2019re then indulging in that same capitalist system and there\u2019s no way it\u2019s going to change as long as we do that. \u2026 I struggle with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n But the Curb Your Enthusiasm<\/em> director-producer is app<\/a>reciative that he has found a way to make his \u201cradical work,\u201d even though the current industry climate and constantly changing media landscape continues to make it more difficult.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe way I can make a radical work is by saying that I could do it for a little money, and the way [producers and directors] say yes to it is they think, \u2018Oh, that radical little work that\u2019s not going to cost any money is going to make money.\u2019 Absolutely. That is the system,\u201d Charles explained. <\/p>\n

\n He continued, \u201cI haven\u2019t been able, I\u2019ve been doing stuff on YouTube, I\u2019ve been trying to figure out a way to get out of that, to move out of that. It\u2019s very, very difficult to do. Because YouTube is owned by somebody, Instagram is owned by somebody. Everything, you know, it\u2019s very hard to get your word out, your thoughts out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Charles\u2019 latest project, A24\u2019s Dicks: The Musical<\/em>, which stars Josh Sharp, Aaron Jackson, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Megan Thee Stallion and Bowen Yang, is currently playing in theaters.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
