\n Microsoft\u2018s planned, but protracted $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard can be completed after the U.K. competition regulator finally app<\/a>roved the deal on Friday.<\/p>\n

\n The software giant made the bid for the video game<\/a> developer behind Call of Duty<\/em>, Guitar Hero<\/em> and Overwatch<\/em> in January 2022, but the U.K.\u2019s Competition Markets Authority (CMA) blocked the deal in April this year claiming the acquisition was \u201cbad for Britain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Back then, the CMA said it found that the transaction may be expected to result in a \u201csubstantial lessening of competition\u201d in cloud gaming services in the U.K., and Microsoft would find it \u201ccommercially beneficial to make Activision\u2019s titles exclusive to its own cloud gaming service.\u201d In response, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick vehemently attacked the decision and issued a warning about future investment in the U.K.<\/p>\n

\n On Friday, the CMA said that it had concluded that the acquisition could proceed after Microsoft recently agreed to restructure the deal. Microsoft agreed to transfer cloud gaming rights for current and new Activision Blizzard games to France\u2019s Ubisoft.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe\u2019ve cleared the new deal for Microsoft to buy Activision without cloud gaming rights,\u201d the CMA tweeted. \u201cIn August, Microsoft made a concession that would see Ubisoft, instead of Microsoft, buy Activision\u2019s cloud gaming rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The CMA added, \u201cThis new deal will stop Microsoft from locking up competition in cloud gaming, preserving competitive prices and services for U.K. cloud gamers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n With an end in sight for Microsoft\u2019s long and rocky pursuit of Activision Blizzard \u2014 the acquisition agreement is set to expire on Oct. 18 \u2014 the tie-up will create the world\u2019s third-largest gaming company by revenue, behind Tencent and Sony. <\/p>\n

\n The deal, the largest in Microsoft\u2019s history, would bring together the owner of the Xbox game platform and Xbox Game Studios (owner of Starfield<\/em> developer Bethesda Softworks and 343 Industries, among other game publishers) and Activision, maker of the massively popular Call of Duty<\/em>, Warcraft<\/em> and Tony Hawk<\/em> franchises, among others.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
