Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arent ramped-up bombardment\u00a0in retaliation for Hamas\u2019 attack on Israel, which began Oct. 7.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Israel has already slammed the cramped s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> of land with deadly airstrikes for nearly a week \u2014 killing at least 1,900 people and injuring thousands more \u2014 with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning Friday that \u201cit\u2019s only the beginning.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And Israeli forces have amassed near the Gaza\u2019s border ahead of a possible ground assault, with United Nations Secretary-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Ant\u00f3nio Guterres claiming the situation \u201chas reached a dangerous new low.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what to know about the situation as it unfolds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_deadline_remains_unclear\"><\/span><strong>The deadline remains unclear\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Israel gave the civilians 24 hours to leave their homes,\u00a0with thousands of\u00a0Palestinians\u00a0cramming their possessions into vehicles, carts or carrying what they could and walking in a mass evacuation southward, according to media images.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s unclear if Israel will keep with the initial 24 hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res<\/em>\u00a0(MSF), an\u00a0independent medical humanitarian organization,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MSF\/status\/1712886892885061811\">wrote on X<\/a>, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that\u00a0Israel has given Al Awda Hospital in northern Gaza just two hours to evacuate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Staff at the hospital, one of several that MSF supports in Gaza, were \u201cstill treating patients,\u201d and are \u201ctrying to protect our staff and patients,\u201d\u00a0the organization said.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also been some confusion as to\u00a0whether Israel will extend the deadline, with reports that Jerusalem has modified it and left it open.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Israeli officials have refused to clarify their position, with\u00a0Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Friday declining to\u00a0answer a question about the deadline at a press conference with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Instead,\u00a0Gallant diverted, insisting that Israeli forces \u201cwill not shoot civilians on purpose.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are asking all the civilians in Gaza City to go south of Gaza.\u00a0 And the reason is that because we don\u2019t want to harm them,\u201d he said, refusing to answer a second, follow up query on the deadline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Should the deadline hold and Israel moves ahead with a ground invasion, it appears unlikely that 1.1 million people will safely evacuate before forces roll in, with the United Nations saying such a movement was \u201cimpossible.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"More_on_the_order\"><\/span><strong>More on the order\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Israel\u2019s order came early Friday ahead of an expected ground invasion, a retaliation for Hamas\u2019 surprise, coordinated attack that killed some 1,300 Israelis and 1,500 Hamas fighters, according to Israel\u2019s government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Israel said it needed to access and target Hamas\u2019 military infrastructure \u2014 with much of it underground \u2014 promising \u201cextensive efforts to avoid harming civilians,\u201d Israeli spokesperson Jonathan Conricus\u00a0said, according to The Associated Press. He also said residents could return once the fighting is over.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who want to save their life, please go south,\u201d\u00a0Gallant\u00a0said alongside Austin. \u201cWe are going to destroy Hamas infrastructures, Hamas headquarters, Hamas military establishment, and take these phenomena out of Gaza and out of the Earth.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But the instructions for civilians to evacuate were a surprise to many, including the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no prior consultation that I\u2019m aware of before the [Israel Defense Forces] issued that evacuation warning,\u201d National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He added that Washington is \u201cconcerned\u201d about civilian casualties as is working on options for those fleeing to do so safely.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make sure that those who want to leave have the ability to leave. And so we are working very aggressively with the Israelis and the Egyptians to try to find a safe passage out of southern Gaza,\u201d Kirby said. \u201cAnd we also want to preserve the ability to get humanitarian assistance in.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Complicating matters, Hamas is reportedly telling residents not to leave and to instead stay in their homes, even going so far as to\u00a0put\u00a0up roadblocks\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the confusion is Israel\u2019s siege of Gaza, which has cut off electricity and prevented evacuation messages from reaching civilians.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_worlds_response\"><\/span><strong>The world\u2019s response\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>International organizations have responded to Israel\u2019s orders with alarm, with the International Committee of the Red Cross calling such instructions \u201cnot compatible with international humanitarian law.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said such an evacuation was not possible without \u201cdevastating humanitarian consequences,\u201d calling on Jerusalem to rescind its orders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Human rights watchdog group Amnesty International, meanwhile, said the order \u201ccannot be considered an effective warning,\u201d calling for it to be \u201crescinded immediately.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The instruction \u201cmay amount to forced displacement of the civilian population, a violation of international humanitarian law,\u201d the group said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Western officials also reacted with trepidation, with President Biden telling reporters he was working \u201curgently to address the humanitarian crisis\u201d in Gaza.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And appearing on MSNBC on Friday, Kirby said that the instruction was a \u201ctall order.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) argued the mass expulsion of over 1 million people in a day \u201cis ethnic cleansing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Responses also came from unlikely individuals, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said the civilian casualties caused by an Israeli ground invasion \u201cwill be absolutely unacceptable.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Egypt_under_pressure\"><\/span><strong>Egypt under pressure\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As the situation grows more dire, there\u2019s been new pressure on Egypt to open its borders to fleeing civilians.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Civilians in Gaza, which sits on the Mediterranean Sea and is bordered by Egypt and Israel, are not able to move freely through border crossings as they are almost all controlled by Israel. Instead, individuals need to be granted special permits, which are rare, to cross into both countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Egypt, which so far has resisted to accept a mass exodus of Palestinians, is being called on to make an exception at a time of war.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of State Antony Blinken this week said the United States was in \u201congoing\u201d talks with Egypt and Israel to set up a humanitarian corridor at the Rafah border crossing, a passage controlled by Egypt, for Americans and other civilians in Gaza.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Blinken said the situation was\u00a0\u201cunderstandably complicated.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the White House revealed that U.S.\u00a0national security officials held calls with the United Nations on Thursday and Friday about the situation in Gaza, but\u00a0did not say\u00a0whether the calls have confirmed a deal to allow foreign nationals to cross into Egypt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even if Egypt does open its borders as a humanitarian corridor, that option isn\u2019t necessarily safe \u2014 as the Israeli military has bombed crossing at the border several times.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_situation_in_Gaza_now\"><\/span><strong>The situation in Gaza now\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Israel has relentlessly struck Gaza over the past week, leveling whole neighborhoods even as it has enacted a complete blockage of food, water and medical supplies.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The strip of land is also under a virtual total power blackout, with\u00a0hospitals and residents relying on generators for power and fuel supplies dwindling.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The siege has caused more than 423,000 Palestinians in Gaza to be displaced internally, according to the\u00a0UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).\u00a0The numbers are only increasing as Israeli airstrikes continue and are expected to jump ever higher with Israel\u2019s expected ground assault.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As Israel prepares for the imminent ground invasion \u2014\u00a0with troops massing along the Gaza border \u2014 its forces have entered the territory to conduct raids in search of some 150 hostages thought to be held by Hamas, according to its military.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Should the more than 1 million Palestinians in Gaza\u2019s north make it to the south, that would cram the territory\u2019s entire population into only a 25-mile strip.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And, even that journey isn\u2019t safe, with Hamas\u2019 media office reporting that airstrikes on Gaza City hit cars in three locations, killing 70 people as residents attempted to flee.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s army so far hasn\u2019t promised to protect civilian locations such as hospitals, schools and U.N. shelters, with military spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari only saying that forces would keep civilians safe \u201cas much as we can,\u201d but he that \u201cit\u2019s a war zone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
