\n Hunger Game<\/a>s<\/em>: Mockingjay<\/em> director Francis Lawrence said that he now understands the mixed reactions to the final book being divided into two films.<\/p>\n

\n During an interview with People<\/em> magazine<\/a>, published online Friday, the filmmaker admitted that if he had to redo the Jennifer Lawrence-led films, he wouldn\u2019t split Mockingjay<\/em> into two separate parts.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cI totally regret it. I totally do,\u201d Lawrence said. \u201cI\u2019m not sure everybody does, but I definitely do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n He also noted that the team agreed at the time that the two halves of\u00a0Mockingjay<\/em>, which were released in theaters a year apart, \u201chad their own separate dramatic questions,\u201d which made for complete arcs. But he also acknowledged why some fans weren\u2019t too happ<\/a>y with the long waiting period between the films.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cWhat I realized in retrospect \u2014 and after hearing all the reactions and feeling the kind of wrath of fans, critics and people at the split \u2014 is that I realized it was frustrating,\u201d Lawrence said. \u201cAnd I can understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n He continued, \u201cIn an episode of television, if you have a cliffhanger, you have to wait a week or you could just binge it and then you can see the next episode. But making people wait a year, I think, came across as disingenuous, even though it wasn\u2019t. Our intentions were not to be disingenuous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n But the director also added that it was nice being able to adapt more from the books by breaking it up into two parts.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cIn truth, we got more on the screen out of the book than we would\u2019ve in any of the other movies<\/a> because you\u2019re getting close to four hours of screen time for the final book,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\n As for his upcoming prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes<\/em>, which arrives in theaters on Nov. 17, Lawrence said the intention was always to make one movie from Suzanne Collins\u2019 book that was published in 2020, even if it meant for a longer run time.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cI would never let them split the book in two,\u201d he said. \u201cThere was never a real conversation about it. It\u2019s a long book, but we got so much shit for splitting\u00a0Mockingjay<\/em>\u00a0into two \u2014 from fans, from critics, from everybody \u2014 that I was like, \u2018No way. I\u2019ll just make a longer movie.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
