or Black Shesh variety.<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The famously talented winemakers of Mirdita, high in the mountains of northern Albania, have never been so worried.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-banner first-banner ads-336x280\"><!-- \/4988204\/Phys_Story_InText_Box --><br \/>\n      <\/section>\n<p>Rising temperatures, hail, and disease have taken their toll on the unique local grapes that make the region&#8217;s delicate red wines and floral rakis which are traditionally distilled by the women rather than the men.<\/p>\n<p>Wines from the fiercely independent Catholic families of the mountains have fans as far away as the Vatican.<\/p>\n<p>But in the small village of Prosek, Gjon Barllokgjonaj has seen the fruits of his labor destroyed by the punishing heat this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s nothing left, I&#8217;ve lost everything,&#8221; Ndoji, 70, told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>To make it worse, &#8220;some areas have been hit by violent hailstorms&#8221;, said Elton Basha, a professor at the University of Agriculture in Tirana.\n<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Taking_to_higher_ground\"><\/span>Taking to higher ground<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Everything has become more complicated: water stress, frost, drought, disease,&#8221; said Zef Ndoji, a winegrower from Bukmira, who has lost a third of his crop this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even though Albania enjoys a diversity of microclimates that are very favorable for vines&#8221; because of its mountains and its position along the Adriatic Sea, it is also &#8220;faced with new challenges&#8221;, said Professor Basha.\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2023\/after-decades-of-growi.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/2023\/after-decades-of-growi.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"After decades of growing vines, Albanian winemakers are having to adapt to a warmer world and all that comes with it.\">\n<figure class=\"article-img text-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800a\/2023\/after-decades-of-growi.jpg\" alt=\"After decades of growing vines, Albanian winemakers are having to adapt to a warmer world and all that comes with it\" title=\"After decades of growing vines, Albanian winemakers are having to adapt to a warmer world and all that comes with it.\"\/><figcaption class=\"text-left text-darken text-truncate text-low-up mt-3\">\n                After decades of growing vines, Albanian winemakers are having to adapt to a warmer world and all that comes with it.<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Albania has some 11,000 hectares of vineyards, producing 190,000 to 195,000 metric tons of wine a year, according to official figures.<\/p>\n<p>                                              &#8220;The small farmers who account for a considerable proportion of grape production have not had the means to adapt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rigels Kacorri\u2014whose family cultivates 25.5 hectares of Kallmet grapes\u2014has been working for several years with more than 60 small winegrowers in the region to address the challenges.<\/p>\n<p>This year, he has focused his attention on vineyards that are around 600 meters above sea level, dotted with steel stakes that are more resistant to corrosion and able to withstand the humidity of the soil.<\/p>\n<p>He has also started to develop new technologies for monitoring plants and irrigation levels to withstand the harsher temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Kacorri, however, is deeply opposed to planting genetically modified grape varieties designed to weather adverse growing conditions.<\/p>\n<p>For him and others, the natural Kallmet grape varieties famous in the region are reliable for providing &#8220;the real taste&#8221;
