{"id":594597,"date":"2023-10-17T01:22:51","date_gmt":"2023-10-16T22:22:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/fbi-crime-statistics-show-anti-lgbtq-hate-crimes-on-the-rise\/"},"modified":"2023-10-17T01:22:51","modified_gmt":"2023-10-16T22:22:51","slug":"fbi-crime-statistics-show-anti-lgbtq-hate-crimes-on-the-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/fbi-crime-statistics-show-anti-lgbtq-hate-crimes-on-the-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"#FBI crime statistics show anti-LGBTQ hate crimes on the rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/RainbowFlag_061221_AP_Jose-Luis-Magana.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Anti-LGBTQ hate crimes rose sharply in 2022, jumping more than 19 percent over 2021, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/press-releases\/fbi-releases-2022-crime-in-the-nation-statistics\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/press-releases\/fbi-releases-2022-crime-in-the-nation-statistics\">FBI\u2019s annual crime report<\/a> released Monday.<\/p>\n<p>More than 11,600 hate crime incidents were reported to the FBI in 2022, the highest number recorded since the agency began tracking them in 1991. A majority of hate crimes recorded last year targeted Black people, according to\u00a0the\u00a0report.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Hate crimes targeting LGBTQ people were up significantly compared with 2021, with 622 reported single-bias, anti-LGBTQ hate crimes. Hate crimes motivated by an anti-transgender bias rose more than 35 percent year over year, reaching 338 incidents.<\/p>\n<p>Kelley Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign, a national LGBTQ civil rights group, described the increase in hate crimes as \u201cboth shocking and heartbreaking, yet sadly, not unexpected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe constant stream of hostile rhetoric from fringe anti-equality figures, alongside the relentless passage of discriminatory bills, particularly those targeting transgender individuals, in state legislatures, created an environment where it was sadly foreseeable that individuals with violent tendencies might respond to this rhetoric,\u201d Robinson <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/press-releases\/fbis-annual-crime-report-amid-state-of-emergency-anti-lgbtq-hate-crimes-hit-staggering-record-highs\">said Monday in a\u00a0statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Robinson, who testified before Congress last year during a\u00a0first-of-its-kind hearing\u00a0on surging anti-LGBTQ violence and hate speech, added that Monday\u2019s FBI data \u201cserves as another alarming indicator of the state of emergency our community finds itself in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Human Rights Campaign in June\u00a0declared a national state of emergency\u00a0for LGBTQ people in the U.S. for the first time in its 40-year history, citing the passage of laws that target the community. More than 500 anti-LGBTQ bills were introduced in state legislatures this year,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/legislative-attacks-on-lgbtq-rights\">according to the American Civil Liberties Union<\/a>\u00a0(ACLU), and at least 84 became law. Most measures threaten to roll back the rights of transgender young people.<\/p>\n<p>President Biden denounced laws that target LGBTQ people as \u201chateful\u201d and \u201cdangerous\u201d during a speech Saturday at the Human Rights Campaign national dinner in Washington.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cFamilies across the country now face excruciating decisions to move to a different state to protect their child from dangerous anti-LGBTQ laws,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden recognized several LGBTQ people and allies who lost their lives to anti-LGBTQ violence this year, including O\u2019Shae Sibley, who was fatally stabbed while dancing at a Brooklyn gas station; Colin Smith, who was killed while defending a friend from anti-LGBTQ harassment; and Laura Ann Carleton, who was shot and killed by a man who\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nixle.us\/ENN3H\">made \u201cdisparaging remarks\u201d<\/a>\u00a0about a rainbow Pride flag displayed outside her clothing store in Lake Arrowhead, Calif.<\/p>\n<p>Biden similarly\u00a0warned of increasing anti-LGBTQ violence\u00a0last week in a statement marking the 25th anniversary of the killing of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming who was brutally attacked and later died of his injuries in one of the most notorious anti-gay hate crimes in U.S. history.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cToday, as threats and violence targeting the LGBTQI+ community continue to rise, our work is far from finished,\u201d Biden <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/10\/12\/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-the-25th-anniversary-of-the-tragic-death-of-matthew-shepard\/\">said in the Oct. 12\u00a0statement<\/a>. \u201cNo American should face hate or violence for who they are or who they love.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
