\n Burt Young, a former boxer who was in Sylvester Stallone\u2018s corner as his brother-in-law Paulie in the six Rocky<\/em> films and received a supporting actor Oscar nomination for his turn in the original, has died. He was 83.<\/p>\n

\n He died on Oct. 8 in Los Angeles, his daughter, Anne Morea Steingieser, confirmed to The New York Times<\/em><\/a> Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\n A tough guy in real life who usually played tough guys onscreen, Young portrayed a rotten client of gumshoe Jack Nicholson\u2019s in\u00a0Chinatown\u00a0<\/em>(1974), was mobster \u201cBed Bug\u201d Eddie in\u00a0The Pope of Greenwich Village\u00a0<\/em>(1984) and played Rodney Dangerfield\u2019s protector\/chauffeur Lou\u00a0in\u00a0Back to School\u00a0<\/em>(1986).<\/p>\n

\n Young also app<\/a>eared in four movies<\/a> in four straight years with fellow Queens guy James Caan \u2014\u00a0Cinderella Liberty\u00a0<\/em>(1973),\u00a0The Gambler\u00a0<\/em>(1974),\u00a0The Killer Elite\u00a0<\/em>(1975) and\u00a0Harry and Walter Go to New York\u00a0<\/em>(1976) \u2014 before they worked together again in\u00a0Mickey Blue Eyes\u00a0<\/em>(1999).<\/p>\n

\n He played a getaway driver in Sam Peckinpah\u2019s\u00a0The Killer Elite<\/em>, then got behind the wheel again for the director as a renegade trucker in\u00a0Convoy\u00a0<\/em>(1978).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n As the sullen ex-Navy man Paulie Pennino, the older brother of best friend Rocky\u2019s wife, Adrian (Talia Shire), Young was a stalwart of the MGM franchise starting with the inaugural 1976 release. After giving the boxer the idea to train in a chilly meat locker and working as his cornerman, Paulie was a staple of all the movies through\u00a0Rocky Balboa\u00a0<\/em>(2006).<\/p>\n

\n \u201cI was on the MGM lot when Sly Stallone came over and introduced himself to me, told me he wrote\u00a0Rocky\u00a0<\/em>and said, \u2018You gotta do it,\u2019 \u201d he recalled<\/a> in a 2009 interview for the website The Sweet Science<\/a>. \u201cI wanted to do it right away, but I wanted to twist their arms a little bit, not look too eager.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cI thought the script had the cleanest street prose I\u2019d ever read. Stallone is not only a workaholic, he\u2019s a genius who is always looking three years ahead. He has a real eyeball for what\u2019s going on in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n In 1978, Young wrote and starred as a trumpet player in the heart-wrenching film\u00a0Uncle Joe Shannon<\/em>, produced by\u00a0Rocky\u00a0<\/em>Oscar winners Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler.<\/p>\n

\n He was born Gerald Tommaso DeLouise in Queens on April 30, 1940. His father was a sheet metal mechanic who became a shop teacher in high school, and his mother was a dressmaker.<\/p>\n

\n Young got into mischief in high school and, with the help of his dad, joined the U.S. Marines before he turned 16, lying about his age. He boxed in the service, winning 32 of 34 fights during his two-year stint in Okinawa, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n When he got out, he trained with Cus D\u2019Amato (later Mike Tyson\u2019s trainer) and claimed to be unbeaten in a handful of bouts as a pro. He said his biggest payday from a fight was $400. (Later, he \u201cfought\u201d Muhammad Ali in an exhibition for charity, and they would become pals.)<\/p>\n

\n While he worked as a carpet cleaner, salesman and installer, he began studying at the Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg, who would serve as his mentor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n \u201cWhat happened is that I was chasing a girl and she [said she] wanted to study with Lee Strasberg. I thought he [Strasberg] was a girl,\u201d he told<\/a> New York\u2019s\u00a0News<\/a>day\u00a0<\/em>in 1985. \u201cAnyway, I met him and he told me, \u2018You\u2019re very tense. You have huge tension about you. I feel you\u2019re an emotional library.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n

\n His first acting gig came at age 28 in a play, and his first two movies were stories revolving around crime in New York City:\u00a0The Gang That Couldn\u2019t Shoot Straight\u00a0<\/em>(1971), from a Jimmy Breslin novel, and\u00a0Across 110th Street\u00a0<\/em>(1972).<\/p>\n

\n Young went on to appear on the big screen in\u00a0Amityville II: The Possession\u00a0<\/em>(1982),\u00a0Lookin\u2019 to Get Out\u00a0<\/em>(1982),\u00a0Once Upon a Time in America\u00a0<\/em>(1984),\u00a0Over the Brooklyn Bridge\u00a0<\/em>(1984),\u00a0Last Exit to Brooklyn\u00a0<\/em>(1989),\u00a0Betsy\u2019s Wedding\u00a0<\/em>(1990),\u00a0Excessive Force\u00a0<\/em>(1993),\u00a0She\u2019s So Lovely\u00a0<\/em>(1997),\u00a0The Adventures of Pluto Nash\u00a0<\/em>(2002),\u00a0Transamerica\u00a0<\/em>(2005) and\u00a0Win Win\u00a0<\/em>(2011).<\/p>\n

\n On television, Young was dormmates with Corey Haim on the short-lived NBC sitcom\u00a0Roomies<\/em>, played the retired mobster father of Steve Schirripa\u2019s character on\u00a0The Sopranos\u00a0<\/em>and guest-starred as Lt. Palumbo in\u00a0Murder Can Hurt You!\u00a0<\/em>an ABC spoof of\u00a0Columbo<\/em>-like detective shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n He made his Broadway debut in 1986 opposite Robert De Niro in\u00a0Cuba & His Teddy Bear<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n Young returned to his ringside roots in the 1980s when he managed boxer David Sears. A light-heavyweight, Sears fought for the title but was knocked out in the third round by Michael Spinks in Atlantic City in February 1985.<\/p>\n

\n Survivors include his wife, Lisa, and his daughter from his first marriage, Anne.<\/p>\n

\n A passion for painting was fueled when, at age 11, Young won an easel and paints in a New York City Parks Department contest. An exhibition of his work in 2006, the\u00a0New York Post\u00a0<\/em>wrote, demonstrated \u201ca whimsical touch and flair for color,\u201d and he said he once got $66,000 for a painting.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cI thought, \u2018What better way to maybe support yourself, without directing, acting or writing.\u2019 There\u2019s no censorship,\u201d he said<\/a>\u00a0in 2012. \u201cWith so many movies, my work ends up on the cutting room floor \u2014 every actor has that. With my paintings, what are they going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
