{"id":595579,"date":"2023-10-26T05:37:33","date_gmt":"2023-10-26T02:37:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/these-9-democrats-voted-against-resolution-backing-israel-condemning-hamas\/"},"modified":"2023-10-26T05:37:33","modified_gmt":"2023-10-26T02:37:33","slug":"these-9-democrats-voted-against-resolution-backing-israel-condemning-hamas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/these-9-democrats-voted-against-resolution-backing-israel-condemning-hamas\/","title":{"rendered":"#These 9 Democrats voted against resolution backing Israel, condemning Hamas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/AP23145622413985-e1685566682114.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Nine House Democrats voted against a resolution on Wednesday that would\u2019ve backed Israel and condemned militant group Hamas attack against the country earlier this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a 412-10-6 vote, the House chamber showed string support for Israeli allies after Hamas launched a surprise attack against the country earlier this month that left 1,400 Israeli citizens dead and more than 200 others held in hostage by Hamas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In response, Israel has launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of airstrikes in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of 6,546 residents and 17,439 suffering injuries, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MOHGaza1994\/\">according to<\/a> the Gaza Health Ministry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the majority of lawmakers expressed their support for Israel, some lawmakers have criticized Israel for their airstrikes in Gaza and even calling for the U.S. to end its funding to the nation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are the nine House Democrats who voted against the resolution:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Rashida Tlaib (Mich.)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tlaib, who is of Palestinian heritage, has been a vocal critic of the Israeli government, previously denouncing a House resolution earlier this year supporting Israel in a floor speech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsrael is an apartheid state. To assert otherwise, Mr. Speaker, in the face of this body of evidence, is an attempt to deny the reality and an attempt to normalize violence of apartheid,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/therecount\/status\/1681398158683934720\">Tlaib said<\/a> during a floor speech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Tlaib was one of the few progressive members of Congress that skipped Israeli President Isaac Herzog\u2019s address to Congress in July.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tlaib also faced backlash earlier this month for her initial statement on the attack, labeling Israel an an apartheid state and calling for the U.S. to end its finding for the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe failure to recognize the violent reality of living under siege, occupation, and apartheid makes no one safer. No person, no child anywhere should have to suffer or live in fear of violence. We cannot ignore the humanity in each other,\u201d Tlaib said in her statement. \u201cAs long as our country provides billions in unconditional funding to support the apartheid government, this heartbreaking cycle of violence will continue.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p><strong>Rep. Cori Bush (Mo.)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bush, who called for the U.S.<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepCori\/status\/1710825310642466999?s=20\"> to end<\/a> its support for Israel earlier this month, also led a coalition of progressive lawmakers who called for President Biden to work for an im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te cease-fire between Hamas and Israel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bush.house.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/bushceasefirenowresolution.pdf\">Ceasefire Now Resolution<\/a>, introduced last week, urged Biden to push for an agreement to end the conflict and \u201cpromptly send and facilitate the entry of humanitarian assistance into Gaza.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI am grieving for every Palestinian, Israeli, and American life lost to this violence, and my heart breaks for all those who will be forever traumatized because of it,\u201d  the Montana lawmaker said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWar and retaliatory violence doesn\u2019t achieve accountability or justice; it only leads to more death and human suffering,\u201d she added. \u201cThe United States bears a unique responsibility to exhaust every diplomatic tool at our disposal to prevent mass atrocities and save lives\u2026we need a ceasefire now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Jamaal Bowman (N.Y.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bowman.house.gov\/2023\/10\/congressman-bowman-s-updates-and-resources-on-war-in-israel-and-palestine\">In a statement earlier this month<\/a>, Bowman called for the U.S. to work on a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, noting that \u201cIsraeli and Palestinian civilians do not deserve to be killed due to this war. And we must govern in ways that nurture humanity, not succumb to violence.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bowman was also one of the few progressive members of Congress who <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bowman.house.gov\/2023\/7\/news-rep-jamaal-bowman-statement-on-israeli-president-herzog-s-joint-address-to-congress\">skipped<\/a> Israeli President Isaac Herzog\u2019s address to Congress in July.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must remember that Palestinian civilians are not responsible for Hamas\u2019s actions. We must ensure we center human rights and be clear-eyed about the loss of life that will unnecessarily be inflicted upon all innocent civilians,\u201d Bowman said in his statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe need open discussion of the root causes of this conflict to end this violence and stop Hamas once and for all and bring us to a peaceful two-state solution,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Andre Carson (Ind.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Carson, who skipped Herzog\u2019s joint address to Congress in July, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/carson.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/rep-carson-statement-deaths-israel-and-palestine\">also called<\/a> for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, saying the U.S. call for the end of \u201cIsrael\u2019s unfair, two-tiered rule over the Palestinian people.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Carson also joined Bush as a co-sponsor of the Ceasefire Now Resolution in early October.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis latest escalation of violence painfully demonstrates the urgent need for just and lasting peace,\u201d Carson said in his statement. \u201cTo achieve this, the US must rededicate ourselves and our resources to a real two-state solution, and call for the end of Israel\u2019s unfair, two-tiered rule over the Palestinian people. This includes concrete steps to preserve the future of a Palestinian state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Al Green (Texas)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/algreen.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/congressman-al-green-addresses-why-he-did-not-sign-hres771\">In a statement<\/a>, the Texas congressman explained the reason he wouldn\u2019t support the resolution was due to his position on working for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, saying his \u201cpreeminent rationale from which others emanate is my philosophical conviction that issues of war and peace are questions of con<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>, coupled with my sincere belief that we must plan for peace at the genesis of war.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWinning a war while losing the peace likely portends future wars. Regrettably, the resolution at hand does not mention a two-state solution in tandem with the necessity to provide aid to the Palestinians, yet both are part and parcel to any hope for lasting peace,\u201d Green said in his statement. \u201cI was proud to see President Biden take a similar stance in his address to the nation of Israel on October 18th.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy desire for a two-state solution is why, on October 12th, 2023, prior to President Biden\u2019s statement, I sent a letter to the Foreign Affairs Committee Chair and Ranking Member explaining in greater detail why I had not signed onto H.Res. 771.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Summer Lee (Pa.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The freshman lawmaker joined Bush and her colleagues in co-introducing the Ceasefire Now Resolution earlier this month. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe violence that continues to escalate in Israel and Palestine is devastating to watch. I once again strongly condemn the violence, terrorism, and hostage taking by Hamas that tore away the lives of over a thousand Israeli civilians,\u201d Lee said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we cannot allow innocent civilians in Gaza \u2013 including children \u2013 to continue to be collectively and inhumanely punished for Hamas\u2019 horrific actions, as we\u2019ve already seen Israeli airstrikes kill thousands of civilians against international human rights law, and force hundreds of thousands of people out of their homes,\u201d Lee added. \u201cContinued retaliation against civilians will do nothing to end this tragic cycle of violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ocasio-cortez.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/statement-rep-ocasio-cortez-violence-israel-and-palestine\">In a statement <\/a>earlier this month, Ocasio-Cortez called for an \u201cimmediate ceasefire and de-escalation\u201d between the two sides.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday is devastating for all those seeking a lasting peace and respect for human rights in Israel and Palestine. I condemn Hamas\u2019 attack in the strongest possible terms. No child and family should ever endure this kind of violence and fear, and this violence will not solve the ongoing oppression and occupation in the region,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez said in her statement. \u201cAn immediate ceasefire and de-escalation is urgently needed to save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ilhan Omar (Minn.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/omar.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/rep-omars-statement-voting-no-hr-771\">In a statement<\/a>, Omar explained the reason she voted against the resolution, which was that she \u201ccannot support a resolution that fails to acknowledge and mourn the lives of Palestinians taken by the Israeli military.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe resolution also fails to acknowledge the Israeli government\u2019s military bombardment of Gaza, especially after Israeli officials openly admitted to implementing collective punishment of Palestinians in Gaza,\u201d Omar said in her statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur position should be consistent in defending innocent lives. We must use diplomacy to secure the release of hostages, end the violence by negotiating a ceasefire, restore water, food, and fuel to Gaza, and work toward lasting peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy unwavering commitment to human rights and peace compels me to oppose any action that perpetuates a crisis that has already ended many lives,\u201d she added. \u201cFor this reason, I cast my vote against House Resolution 771.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Delia Ramirez (Ill.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ramirez, a first-term lawmaker, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ramirez.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/congresswoman-ramirez-statement-no-vote-hres-771\">issued a statement <\/a>on the reason she decided to vote against the resolution, saying that the resolution didn\u2019t honor a two-state solution between the two sides \u201cand did not recognize the interconnectedness of the Israeli and Palestinian people in their struggle for liberation and safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot unequivocally support or condone the Israeli government\u2019s collective punishment of the Palestinian people in Gaza. The Palestinian people are not Hamas,\u201d Ramirez said. \u201cWe must use our collective voice and influence to end the siege that has claimed the lives of more than 2,000 Palestinian children, displaced thousands of Palestinians, and limited the humanitarian aid that can reach the region. Violence cannot bring peace, and atrocities cannot justify further war crimes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe in a future where Israelis and Palestinians are free and safe.
